This Saturday 13th of August 2011 we extend a hearty welcome to the supporters, players and officials of Newcastle Benfield to the KGV in their 9th season in the Northern League. We also welcome our own supporters and any neutrals who may be here to witness the KGV experience and the students of Askham Bryan College who along with members of the Supporters’ Group helped with some painting and tidying up the ground in the closed season.

The last time the Lions visited the KGV was in the League Cup in January 2008 and the 0-2 defeat ended our cup run. In the League we have to go back to the season we were relegated from the First Division and they did the double over us with a 1-2 at the KGV on 18th August 2004 and a 4-1 drubbing at theirs on 11th January 2005.

Come and support the Priorymen in the first game back in Division One. :) :) :) :)

Guisborough Town 0 Newcastle Benfield 3 HT
Guisborough Town 1 Newcastle Benfield 4 FT

Norton, Roddam, Liley, Marron, Oakley, Wood, Henry, Walker, I'Anson, Bythway (luke), McPhillips. Subs: Wray, Farrington (on for Liley 74), Clark, Guy, Steel (on for Walker 67).

With Onions injured and Lee Bythway in London helping police the riots it was new boy Big Tommy Marron who took the Captain's armband and led the Priorymen out to face the Lions of Newcastle Benfield. The Lions did appear to sleeping today for the first 5 minutes as they had to defend an early free kick and Chris I'Anson shot over the bar. On 10 minutes they woke up and Jack Norton had to parry the ball to safety from a Johnny Mann shot but I'Anson fought back and headed over the bar. Some good play followed in the Lion's den but Guisborough Town were unable to get a shot on target. Just after the quarter hour mark Mann this time made his shot count and it was 0-1. He should have doubled his goal tally on half an hour when everyone watched his goalbound lob head towards the empty goal. Cari Paterson had not read the script and decided to help the ball into the net but as the ball entered the net the hosts were relieved to see the assistant referee's flag up for offside and the whistle confirmed this. Five minutes later a mix up in defence saw Michael Chilton hit the goal with a close range effort and just before half time Phil Lumsden's shot made it 0-3.

Luke Bythway scored the fastest goal in the FA Cup a few seasons ago when we beat Wakefield thanks to his goal within 13 seconds. Today he scored an early goal in the second half when the ball raced 26 yards into the bottom left hand corner leaving keeper Paul Antony no chance. Any thoughts of a comeback were dashed before the hour had elapsed as Shaun Bell scored the fourth. Steel came on for Walker and Farrington for Liley during the second half but despite several attempts the game finished a repeat of the game in January 2005 4-1 scoreline.
