A deserved win for Shields tonight with a good show against a strong West Auckland side, so well done all concerned to players and management, as Shields go up into the top half of the league at 10th for the first time this season and to 4th in the form table. A dream start with a goal from Scroggins after 30 seconds after a ball came out to him off the post as Shields attacked with purpose from the onset. But a complete misunderstanding in defence saw West gifted a simple goal after two minutes to restore parity. The visitors missed a chance on 20, but on 30 Sweeney was brought down from behind in the box, and despite loud protests the referee chose to ignore the offence. Scroggins scored with a grand free kick around the wall and high into the top left corner of the net on 40 for Shields to regain the lead in an entertaining game. In the second period Sweeney missed a great chance when put through to increase the scoreline, but shot narrowly over. However the hard working Ramsey made no mistake after 30 minutes to score when another box offence against Sweeney was ignored as the referee turned away. Brabbs and Burnell subbed Fitzpatrick ( who had a good game ) and Sweeney after 33 and then Armstrong came on for Coe. Much purpose in the Shields team tonight, in which Stoneman was outstanding in defence, with good work from Hall and a commendable performance all round..
