Sorry guys not Northern League related, But wondered if the knowledgeable folks out there know or heard of anyone signing a FIVE year contracts??, Thought it's rather unusual in Non league football, even Pro football?, Just that both Picton & Fenton have signed 5yr deals at South Shields.

Wouldn’t say it’s that unusual seeing as their day jobs is working for the South Shields FC football academy, they left good jobs at Monkseaton academy to take up the same roles at the newly set up SSFC academy so in their cases it’s not that usual

Albeit a five year contract is probably quite unique for a Non League management team but it’s a somewhat unique situation they are in.

Nail firmly hit upon head...

SSFC are looking to build future capacity. I sincerely hope a sticky season does not put them off. The club is a well conceived project and not just simply money thrown at the first team.

I'd also hope that in future other NL teams will follow their path and develop a progressive club too.

Hi All,

Totally agree with your comments regarding Shields being in a unique position, And yes it will be very interesting to see where South Shields are in 5yrs from now, Personally I can see Shields being in the Conference League.

But like I said very unusal to see any club with it being Pro Football or Non league football to give their management a five year contract, Shows the owner and the directors are in for the long term and they have a serios vision where they want to be in five years from now.

We hope that the momentum keeps growing and the work seems very well in hand to make the squad at least theoretically capable of going for a 4th successive promotion though a good top half position would be fine by me.. Southampton just gave Hughes a 3 year contract and I'd not want to bet on his actually achieving that..

A bit patronising don't you think? South Shields were hardly classed as progressive until a multi millionaire came along and pumped his cash in. Good look to Shields, I hope they do well, but you can hardly expect other clubs to have a similar sort of rise when they depend on the pennies that come in through the small crowds and good will of local sponsors.

No I don't think it is patronising at all Neil M, I have however paid you the due respect of replying to your comment in full, rather than extracting a single sentence as you did to mine.

In context, my comments are about the building of a broader and deeper club, not just about the first team. A number of other NL teams are doing this too, but with a smaller budget and with less impact upon the first team just yet.

I am not expecting other clubs to have a similar rise and at no point have I made such a comment, rather I'd trust that if the SSFC rise through the divisions falters or stutters that the broader development of the club does not get scrapped. This was the essence of my broader comment.
