DURHAM CITY (0) 4 BILLINGHAM TOWN (7) 8
Gredziak, Spence, Hutchinson 5, Davis 2,
Claydon, Hayman

It would be easier to decrypt Sanskrit scrolls than to make sense of this game! One of the standout comments on Towns rolling twitter feed stated ‘it was an insane game of football’. Couldn’t put it better myself! Seven nil up at half time you could forgive the players for thinking the game was over. When Joe Hillerby scored the eighth and final goal there was a sense of relief as the Citizens had somehow reduced the deficit to three. No Durham player had scored since the opening day win against Willington and yet they showed sheer determination in the second half to give Town supporters a fright. There was a danger the team performance could have gone from sizzling to fizzling but credit also has to go to Billingham who finished the final fifteen minutes with the same attitude they showed in the first half. In the past, joint manager Barry Oliver had used the terminology ‘lesson learned’ and the squad will no doubt feel that philosophy would also apply after this game. For the neutral, this game had everything. Twelve goals, two penalties, two red cards, and ultimately two teams giving it their all. Grass roots football providing entertainment and adrenaline by the bucket load. The win means that Town are only two points behind Chester Le Street Town and Thornaby in the league table with games in hand on both clubs.

With fixtures coming thick and fast, Oliver and Paul Edwards made further changes to the line up. Stephen Oakley and Jack Connor were both rested but Elliott Beddow returned after a spell on the sidelines. Astonishingly, Town were three goals to the good by the quarter hour mark - all coming from Craig HUTCHINSON in a four minute blitz. The first - rifled home from inside the box, the second a close range finish after a long punt forward and the third from the move of the match. Oliver Simpson released Matty Robinson on the left and the stand in full back ran unopposed before making a perfect slide rule pass for Hutchinson to complete his hat-trick. Pulsating stuff! Hutchinson added a forth from the penalty spot after Harry Spence handled Jamie Davis goal-bound effort. Davis soon got on the scoresheet although Joe Wilson got a hand to the midfielders strike and Davis doubled his tally with an exquisite finish into the bottom corner. Just before half time Hutchinson scored his fifth and Towns seventh via unselfish play from Elliott Beddow. And they were just the goals never mind the missed opportunities!

Unsurprisingly, Durham manager Wayne Gredziak introduced himself from the bench and although he’s getting on in years, the talent is still there! The former Shildon striker pulled one back with a curling free kick, giving Simpson no chance of keeping it out. Spence then redeemed himself with a headed goal from Glen Donaldson’s corner and Morghan Claydon added a third from the spot after Brandon Kirkbride had bundled over the new signing from Crook Town. All of a sudden Town were in disarray and Jamie Hayman added a fourth with an angled finish. Spence then ended an eventful afternoon with a red card along with Robinson for an altercation. On came Luke Hogan and Kyle Morris and the substitutions gave the side a much needed revival. Morris had a shot blocked and the ball fell invitingly for Joe HILLERBY to half volley into the back of the net. Normal service was resumed as Town piled forward. Wilson superbly denied Kirkbride and Hillerby dragged wide before the final whistle went! Another win, another three points, another entertaining day! Ok maybe Sanskrit would be harder to cipher but life is never dull being a Billingham Town fan and reporter!
