Billingham Town will face Birtley Town in an all Northern League Division Two tie in the next round, having defeated a dogged Campion side. Despite a strong and vociferous home support, the Town faithful had to be patient but once the first goal went in, and then the second, it was a case of cruise control. Campion came with a game plan to nullify Towns attacking style and although it worked to a point in the first half, they lacked the gears and the know how in finding a tangible response when going behind. In fact, apart from substitute Jay Davis strike which cannoned off the crossbar seventy nine minutes into the game, they couldn’t muster a shot on target. A perfect response from Town’s back four who worked vigorously in midweek to alleviate last week’s defensive flaws. In summary, a workmanlike performance with elements of confidence based football in the second half, and in essence, that’s all that was required. Town will now host Birtley in two weeks time for a place in the first round.

The Town management handed debuts to recent signings Oliver Simpson in goal and Arthur Connelly in place of the injured Elliott Beddow. Campion looked sharp in the opening ten minutes, playing some neat possession based football but all the same, reluctant to attack in numbers. Town could have taken the lead after just three minutes but Jamie Davis couldn’t guide his header past Declan Lambton, having got on the end of Craig Hutchinson’s precise cross. Billingham gradually found their feet - coming to terms with Campions defensive approach. Jack Connor dragged his effort wide from twenty yards and then Lambton performed heroics to keep out Reece Kenney with a brave block inside the box. And the best chance of the half came on thirty six minutes when Hutchinson escaped the back line but again, Lambton came out on top with a fine save to keep the Bradford based club on level terms.

The second half performance was more in keeping with the style of football supporters have become accustomed too. Town made the breakthrough on fifty one minutes to settle the nerves when Matthew Robinson slid the ball perfectly for HUTCHINSON and this time the prodigal son delivered with a nonchalant finish. Cue the pandemonium in the stands, drums, and the odd football chant!! Robinson was then unlucky to see his shot rebound off Lambton and then off his near post but the second goal was coming. This time Hutchinson supplied DAVIS and ‘grandad’ made no mistake, rolling the ball past Lambton and into the net. Hutchinson could have added a third when clean through on goal but Lambton managed to palm the ball behind for a corner. Campion had to come out of their comfort zone and made three attacking substitutions in an attempt to find a way back into the tie. They did conjure a five man move in the final third, the result being a twenty yard strike from Davis that rattled the crossbar. That’s the closest Campion came to threatening Towns goal and then Billingham’s game management kicked in to see out time for a comfortable victory. The Wembley dream is off and running!!
