JARROW v BILLINGHAM TOWN PREVIEW

Town head up north to Jarrow on Wednesday for a rare midweek league fixture - the only other night match pencilled in is against Washington on September 4th. Perth Green was in immaculate condition when Town last visited back in August 2017 and similar conditions will certainly be favourable for a Town squad who have played some exquisite football during pre-season. Billingham come into the game off the back of a workmanlike 4-1 win against Ryton while Jarrow began their campaign against Crook Town, also with a 4-1 victory.

FOCUS ON JARROW:
The South Tyneside club enter their second season within the Northern League after finishing their inaugural campaign in a respectable 12th position. Town won a tight affair 1-0 at Perth Green but were far more convincing at Bedford Terrace, demolishing Jarrow 6-1. Pre season fixtures have been parochial affairs against division one clubs but they kicked off the new season at Crook Town with a convincing win. The squad contains familiar names - players who have experience in division one such as Jordan Mellish (scored an own goal against Town back in March), Peter Kane and Michael Watson has faced Town on several occasions while at Hebburn Town. Another Hebburn/Billingham Town link is Glen Hargrave, who’s stay at Bedford Terrace last season was truncated due to injury. Hargrave will be a danger if he can replicate the kind of form he often showed while playing against Town. Former Bedlington Terrier Jak Wells will be the man between the sticks!

ONE TO WATCH: JONATHAN HIRST
Extremely pacy winger and goal threat and not afraid to shoot from distance. Takes set pieces. Part of the Jarrow side that won the Wearside League and was one of their best players in the early part of last season before moving on to Tow Law Town. Back for a second spell. Already off to a good start, bagging a brace at Crook Town on Saturday.

RECENT RESULTS:
Crook Town 1-4 Jarrow (Hirst 2, Higham, Hargrave)

PRE-SEASON: SELECTED RESULTS:
Jarrow 1-6 Sunderland RCA
Jarrow 1-5 Ryhope CW
Hebburn Town 3-2 Jarrow
Whickham 1-0 Jarrow

TALKING TOWN:
Matthew Robinson may miss out due to his holidays but should be back in time for the Brandon United game on Saturday. There were no reported injuries over the weekend so the Town management will travel up the A19 with a near full strength squad. Craig Hutchinson wasted no time in gaining his first hat-trick of the season and joins former Town Striker Nicky Martin as co joint top scorers along with Easington’s Liam Adamson. Hutchinson will be aiming for the Teesside Golden boot award that is on offer at the end of the season. Matty Hughes will be pushing for a start after a fine individual strike against Ryton over the weekend.

Match Report

With both teams having identical starts winning 4-1 against Crook town and Ryton and Crawcrook Albion respectively you would have thought this game would be tight, but from the outset Billingham Town pressed the home defence and could easily have taken the lead three times in the opening minutes with Craig Hutchinson. Luke Hogan and Elliott Beddow troubling keeper Jak Wells.

After 7 minutes referee Darren Wylam booked Reece Kenney for kicking the ball away and not long later home centre back Jordan Mellish for an similar offence in what was not a difficult game . The chances continued and captain Steve Oakley had an effort cleared off the line after 15 mins

This was followed by Luke Hogan having a shot wide and then Craig Hutchinson broke through the Jarrow defence and scored with a firm shot but was ruled marginally offside.

A goal was coming for the visitors, Reece Kenney had an inswinging free kick well saved by home keeper Jak Wells at the foot of his post then Mark Dixon was the second player booked for a foul by referee Wylam who also booked two other Jarrow players in a frenzy of cards

On 34 mins a neat through ball by Craig Hutchinson lead to Reece Kenney being in on goal and as defender Alex Bone was trying to track Kenney he shot the ball firmly past his own keeper Jak Wells for the opener 1-0

Little was seen of the home attack and on 43 mins an right wing cross from Craig Hutchinson was guided in at the far post by Luke Hogan 2-0 , Kris Summers replaced the injured Lee Moore in defence just before the break

HT BILLINGHAM TOWN 2 JARROW 0

The second period followed much the same pattern with Jarrow having a bit more of the ball without creating any chances. On 54 mins a loose ball in the box was fired home by Craig Hutchinson 3-0 against a clearly shell shocked Jarrow .

On 64 mins a bizarre incident saw an attempted throw out by visiting keeper Sam Naylor go to home striker Jon Higham who took the opportunity to poke the ball home 3-1. In the scuffle for the ball in the net both Naylor and Higham were booked making a total of six bookings by the referee .

After 67 mins a good ball into the box was headed over Wells by Jamie Davies to make it 4-1. Two subs came on for the visitors Daniel Maddison for Luke Hogan and Joe Hillerby for Reece Kenney.

The game opened up and Jarrow were not coping with the pace of the visitors in particular Maddison who had a good chance he put over the bar then in the 94th minute.

The busy Elliott Beddow got through on goal and sizzled a shot past Wells to put the lid on an heavy defeat for an demoralised home side 5-1
