A bit late......

BILLINGHAM TOWN (1) 1 WHITBY TOWN (1) 1
OG 45 TRIALIST 22

Billingham’s positive start to pre-season continued with another 1-1 draw against Northern Premier side Whitby Town. It was the visitors first pre season fixture of the new season while Billingham came into the game imbued with confidence following last weeks draw against Hartlepool United’s first team squad. Whitby fielded an eleven that included three trialists and Connor Dunlavey was handed a start against his former club. Paul Edwards & Barry Oliver selected an initial squad of twenty players and made wholesale changes at half time and throughout the second half. Whitby probably shaded the first half, taking the lead on twenty two minutes when Dunlavey found the trialist in space on the right side and he made no mistake with a low finish. And Billingham had the woodwork to thank when Greg Rutherfords bullet like header rattled the post and away to safety. Against the run of play, Billingham equalised on the stroke of half time with a rapid counter attack. Matty Hughes won the ball outside his own box and released Lee Moore on the right hand side; Moore laid it off for Elliott Beddow and his nonchalant chip fell invitingly for Matty Robinson who tried his luck with a volley. His strike appeared to be going wide but Whitby defender Jassem Sukar could only deflect the ball into his own net.

Billingham were much the better side in the second half with Craig Hutchinson having several opportunities to score while Whitby keeper Daniel Dixon did superbly well to tip over Joe Hillerby’s dipping strike over the crossbar. Dixon made two further notable saves to deny Luke Hogan at the near post and Hutchinson goalbound effort with an outstretched leg. At the other end Dunlavey untroubled Town’s trialist goalkeeper with a low shot and late on the number one made an excellent reactionary save to keep out Alex White from close range.

An entertaining friendly for the time of year and next up for Billingham is another home game next Saturday against Midlands side Holbrook St Michaels.

Town squad
Trialist, Kenny (Davis) Joynes (Dixon) Flounders (Kirkbride) Summers (Oakley) Connor (Morris) Moore, Hughes (Hillerby) Beddow (Kenney) Hutchinson, Robinson (Hogan)
