BLYTH TOWN REPORT

It may seem harsh to suggest that Town had not been at their best of late; maybe suffering from a hangover caused by two cup exits. However, the stats in the league suggest otherwise; one league defeat in seventeen and unbeaten since the end of October. Town have only dropped two points at home since the 6th September but their play had been patchy of late but the second half performance was reminiscent of the form showed before Christmas. Tough on Chris Dickinson too who had to limp off the pitch with an open gash thst required stitches. A bit of a rollercoaster week for Chris; An impressive first half at Hebburn before tiring, followed by a quiet game against Stockton and then another superb first half display that earned him the man of the match award. Ironically, the game wasn't put to bed until his forced substitution which highlights the depth of the squad when there are no suspensions or injuries. Blyth Town showed ambition and intent, something rarely seen from opposing sides at Bedford Terrace. Ultimately though, they lacked a cohesive back four and that could cost them dearly in the long run. Town now have a two week break and focus will be on a twice weekly training plan in preparation for a busy March fixture list.

There was plenty of Blyth spirit on show and Zak Atkinson was able to ghost his way through the defence to shoot wide from the edge of the box. Despite a positive start, Blyth fell behind on nine minutes after some fine one touch football from the home side. Luke Hogan found Craig Hutchinson in the middle and his lay off left Chris DICKINSON with plenty of time to place his shot past Matthew Crooks. Blyth continued to press forward in search of an equaliser; David Robinson blazed wide and Malcolm Morien used his strength to get a shot away but his shot didn't trouble Thomas Dawson in Town's goal. Town had a lucky escape on twenty one minutes when Atkinson avoided the offside trap. The impressive striker pulled the ball back to Robinson, but once again he spooned his shot way over the crossbar. However, Blyth were back on level terms a minute later when Dawson fumbled the ball on the edge of the box leaving Atkinson with a simple tap in. In all fairness, Blyth had been the better side so Billingham fans were delighted when Town regained the lead which came completely out of the blue. Fine work from Hogan and Hutchinson gave DICKINSON the opportunity to strike and his shot cannoned in off the post.

Town's second half performance was akin to the kind of form that has taken them on a long unbeaten run in the league. Hutchinson looked eager to increase his goal tally and was unfortunate to strike the crossbar after a typical counter attack and at the other end, Dean Walker also struck the bar with a sweet volley from the edge of the box. Town looked comfortable but needed the third goal as insurance and what a gem it was too when it arrived. Unusually for Jamie DAVIS, his goal tally had not been the best of late but his exquisite free kick from twenty five yards left Crooks sprawled on the floor in despair. The game was put to bed on ninety minutes when Davis chested down Mattie Crossen's free kick and HUTCHINSON found the bottom corner with an instinctive strike. Town will now prepare for Easington who visit Bedford Terrace on February 11th; The Collierymen will be smarting from today's 6.0 defeat at Northallerton Town.
