WASHINGTON PREVIEW: LEAGUE CUP

After Saturdays FA Vase victory against Northern League Division One opposition, Town have another chance to test themselves when they entertain Washington in the League Cup. Billingham received a welcome bye in the first round whereas Washington defeated a rejuvenated Brandon United via a single goal. Last Season Town exited the competition at this stage, losing 4.3 in an entertaining tie at Waterhouse's, the home of Esh Winning. That match went into extra time but from this season, all League Cup ties will go straight to penalties if the scores are level after ninety minutes.

The Opposition:
Similar to last Saturday's Opposition in Ryhope CW, Washington are another side who are finding life difficult in division one. The difference between them though is that Washington tend to be competitive and look more solid defensively. However, their away form in the league is the worst in the division. From nine games, they have only managed to pick up one point on the road; a respectable 1.1 draw at North Shields way back in August. Matthew Waters is their top scorer with twelve league goals. Andrew Brown is suspended with a four match ban but has been made available for transfer along with Adam Drysdale. Paul Kane is cup-tied having played in the competition for West Allotment Celtic. Plenty of new recruits have signed for the club in recent weeks. Ex Hartlepool United striker Callam Hassan arrived from Sunderland RCA while Adam Cocks and Paul Weldon both came from Guisborough Town. Also a special mention for Foster Garton who had a brief spell with Town last season but suffered from injuries.

Recent Results:
Washington 1-2 Whitley Bay
Washington 2-0 West Allotment Celtic
Washington 0-2 Ashington
Consett 4-1 Washington
Sunderland RCA 2-1 Washington
Washington 1-3 Chester Le Street (Durham CC)

League cup 1st Round Washington 1 Brandon United 0
League Position: Washington 18th (NL1) Town 9th (NL2)

Squad News:
Clayton MacDonald returns from a one match ban but Stephen Oakley will miss this fixture and Saturday's trip to Tow Law as he completes his three match suspension. Luke Hogan played through the pain barrier at the weekend having taken a blow to his ankle at Team Northumbria and maybe rested. Mattie Crossen, Jack Connor and Ashley Lavan are all rated doubtful due to work commitments. Lee Jones could make a return to the squad along with several reserve players. Harry Taylor, Daniel Maloney and Danny Lambert are all long term absentees although Lambert's back problem doesn't require surgery.

Popp's Pointers:
The Washington game is another toughie but one that we know we can win as long as we compete and play the way we can do and at our pace and move the ball quick all over the field. Washington will want to get the ball down and play like we like to so it could be an open game and one for the neutral to watch. It's another cup run that we would like to do well in and a game that we are capable of winning .

Popp's Thoughts on Bottesford Town FA Vase draw:
The vase away game is a beauty for everyone concerned with Billingham Town and it's definitely another winnable but hard game but look at the other draws that we might of got and think ourselves lucky!! Bring it on!! UTT!!
