REPORT: Billingham Town 5 Alnwick Town 0

505050..... No I'm not ringing for a taxi in Dundee or Salisbury or anywhere else for that matter but the incredible sequence of three 5.0 victories in a row!! A plethora of chances went begging last night and you start to wonder if the lads are doing this 5.0 lark on purpose! Ashton Town chairman Mark Hayes showed great humour before the game tweeting a picture of a monkey and a revolver after noticing the previous five nils. Maybe Hayes could be contemplating getting his coat and ordering a taxi out of the Vase after this nightly stroll. By all accounts, Ashton performed with credit last night at promotion chasing Alsager Town, going down to a 3.1 defeat and the game was in the balance for long periods. Whatever happens on Saturday, Town travel across the M62 in fine form and the manner of this victory will surely of given the squad another confidence boost. The remarkable thing about this uncanny run is the fact that defensively, the management team were forced to play eight different players across the back four at various stages due to injuries and suspension! Dixon, Crossen, Rowbotham, Oakley, Taylor, Moore, Redman and MacDonald deserve a mention and so does Scotland's number one, Thomas Dawson who's signature coincided with Town's upturn in form.

It only took two minutes for Billingham to take the lead I'm reliably informed.....yours truly turned up late due to unforeseen circumstances. Chris Dickinson's free kick was deflected into the net for an own goal! Despite Alnwick's recent thrashings, they looked dangerous going forward. Most of their best play came from Joshua Hay (although I did wonder if Jonjo Shelvey had signed on loan) with a header over the bar and a low shot on the edge of the box which Dawson comfortably saved. On twenty one minutes, Town doubled their lead after an opportunist through ball from Ashley Lavan. The central midfielder intercepted Tony Brown's wayward pass and played in HUTCHINSON who then placed the ball past Dominic McMahon, the Alnwick goalkeeper. And the game was practically over by the thirty six minute mark when DICKINSON rifled home after good work on the left by Lee Jones. Further chances came and went; Hutchinson saw a deflected effort come off the corner of the crossbar and the diminutive striker somehow missed an open goal from six yards, shaving the crossbar, denying Elliott Beddow an assist. There was still time for Alnwick to score but Dawson somehow saved a point blank header from Hay to go in 3.0 ahead at half time.

Alnwick must of sensed the cup tie was over because they rarely threatened in the second half with only a long journey home to look forward to! Town continued to press ahead and DICKINSON got the fourth goal after slaloming his way into the box and a minute later HUTCHINSON got the fifth thanks to excellent work from Lavan and Beddow who got his deserved assist. Luke Hogan had two great chances to make the scoreline even more emphatic but McMahon did well to keep out both attempts.

Roll on Saturday and a trip to Ashton, on the outskirts of Wigan. If Town pull off another 5.0 then I can see a few jovial fans overly inebriated and miss the bus back.....Don't worry though.....50505050 should get you back home at a price!
