PREVIEW: H ALNWICK TOWN

Billingham Town return to league action for the next two weekends in preparation for the FA Vase. On Saturday, Alnwick Town travel down for the second time in as many weeks and then Town head up to Newcastle to face league leaders Team Northumbria. With the fixtures piling up, Tuesday nights defeat to Ryhope CW in the Durham Challenge Cup could be a blessing in disguise. In November alone, Town will play in three further cup competitions along with a rearranged league game at Ryton & Crawcrook. If Town defeat Ryhope CW in the Vase then the league game at home to Willington on December 3rd will also need a new date. Although Town are in good form in the league; teams around them are also in the middle of a purple patch. Hebburn and Blyth Town have sneaked under the radar in recent weeks and Northallerton seem to have recovered from their recent wobbles. Manager Barry Oliver will instill the importance of gaining three points knowing that they won't be able to gain a rhythm in the league.

The Opposition:
Fans who witnessed our recent 5.0 demolition job in the Earnest Armstrong Memorial Trophy will know that Alnwick like to play attacking football. They created chances and tested Thomas Dawson on several occasions but their gung-ho nature proved to be there undoing on the night. Town hit Alnwick hard on the counter attack and results since then suggest that the Northumbrians won't alter their playing style. The one player who did impress on the night was Joshua Hay and Liam Brooks/Tony Brown have netted twenty three league goals between them. Defending has proven to be their Achilles heel, conceding a whopping sixty two goals in the league alone. Having said that, they do have a 50% winning record on the road from ten games.

Recent Results:
Alnwick 2-4 Heaton Stannington (Northumberland Cup)
Alnwick 6-2 Darlington RA
Billingham Town 5-0 Alnwick (EA Armstrong Trophy)
Northallerton 11-1 Alnwick
Alnwick 0-3 Blyth Town (League Cup)
Billingham Synthonia 3-0 Alnwick Town

Last season: Billingham Town 0 Alnwick Town 3
League Position: Town 11th Alnwick 13th

Squad News:
Mark Dixon and Clayton MacDonald are suspended for this game and Mattie Crossen is out due to work. Stephen Oakley returns after missing out in midweek and so too does Jack Connor. Connor Dunlavey will be part of the squad.

Popps Pointers:
We will be sticking with the 451 formation but I think that this game will be a lot closer than the 5-0 cup game but it's a match where we should be confident of getting the three points as long as we perform like we know we can and be ruthless in front of goal. Alnwick will come here wanting to put things right from the cup game and they are a hard working side with two forwards that are a handful and a good central midfielder. They will try and play football but also like to go long early to try and catch the back four asleep so we need to be switched on from the whistle.
