1939-40

Sep 2nd - extra preliminary round

Grimethorpe Rovers 4 Ossett Town 2

the Leeds League had been renamed the West Yorkshire League that summer, while Grimethorpe were in the Sheffield Association League. Grimethorpe were later known as Grimethorpe Athletic, but it was as Grimethorpe Miners Welfare that they entered the Yorkshire League in 1959.

this game was the only FA Cup game played in Yorkshire that day and could well be regarded as one of the most unusual games in our history, given what was going on in the world that weekend. Everyone knew war was coming, and in the early hours of Friday Sep 1st, the Luftwaffe launched attacks on Poland, the old battleship Schleswig Holstein bombarded Danzig and the Wehrmacht crossing the border in several places. Frantic diplomatic efforts by British and French officials failed and on 11:15 on Sunday 3rd September, Neville Chamberlain announced that the UK and France had declared war on Germany.

The FA, remembering their PR disaster in 1914 by allowing football to continue as normal, immediately suspended all football, though it resumed a few weeks later with the introduction of war time leagues for the larger clubs. The smaller county leagues continued as normal.

Derby County won the first post war FA Cup, beating Charlton Athletic 4-1.

Pilkington Recreation 2 Ossett Town 5

Oct 16th - 2nd Qualifying Round

Ossett Town 1 Selby Town 4

we finished 5th out of 20 in the Yorkshire League, we also won the West Riding Senior Cup.

David Brown Athletic were from Huddersfield and I think they played in the Huddersfield League, David Brown tractors were the big employers in Huddersfield at the time. Pilkington Recs were from the Doncaster area and I think they played in the Sheffield Association League, they joined the Yorkshire League in 1976. Farsley were still in the West Riding County Amateur League, they joined the Yorkshire League in 1949. Selby finished 4th in the Yorkshire League. In the next round, they beat Frickley, but lost to Scunthorpe United (then still a Midland League club).

Wolves beat Leicester City 3-1 to win the FA Cup.

David Brown also played in the FA Amateur cup this season, they beat North Ferriby United 6-3 in the preliminary round, they were then drawn against Brunswick Institute in the next round but the result is not known. Brunswick then lost to Bradford Rovers in the 2nd qualifying round.
