With regard to ambitious clubs such as Runcorn Linnets then the main problem is not necessarily the reprieve of clubs per se but the unwillingness of the FA to implement one of the conclusions of the Step 5/6 review which was carried out two or three seasons ago. In this was a blueprint to reduce the number of Step 5 leagues to 12 and, by relegating 4 clubs from each of the 6 Step 4 leagues allow for the promotion of two clubs from each Step 5 league. An opportunity wasted according to many.

Overall, it must be correct to encourage ambitious clubs who have the systems in place (and the relevant ground grading) to progress but, imagine what it must have been like back in the dark ages when clubs depended upon being elected to what was then the lowest tier of the professional game. Had a system of automatic promotion and relegation existed then it is more than possible that Altrincham would have been as successful as Wigan Athletic have been.

Agree on both counts. Step 5 is generally reckoned as being the hardest level to get promoted out of, as only one team can progress from each league. The old proposal was a good one. Relegating 4 is not unheard of - it happens at League One. Linnets were unlucky this year - they're definitely worthy of promotion, and unless they mess it up, should make it next season. It might have been harder if Kidsgrove had come down.

And I well remember season after season when non-league clubs tried in vain to get elected to the old Fourth Division. Even when they got together and put forward only one club for election, the teams at the bottom of fourth division (or before that at the bottom of third division north and south) always won the ballot. I believe it was Gateshead which was the first League team to fail to win the vote at the expense of a non-league team. Automatic promotion from what is now the Conference was a great step forward.

Yes a shame for all at Formby. Sadly they wont be last to fold. How can a bell end like Matt be a moderator?. Defeats the whole principle. Like having Jimmy Saville the headteacher at school.

I think he's the reason no one can be arsed using this forum.

What's next for Formby? Reform in a lower league, playing in Formby and rebuild?

I doubt anything. 25000 residents and only 50 can be bothered to watch. No appetite for a local team unfortunately.

Yeah, the community not bothering to support the club and it's ultimately banished to the outskirts of town. Terrible really.

Thoroughly depressing to see any local side go to the wall.

Much like the rest of Formby then! Nothing wrong with sticking to collective strengths!

just got back from holiday and read the news of Formby,
very sad news, saw them at chadderton last season when both sides
played a great game in difficult conditions due to the bad weather,

p.s. cant understand why anyone would be happy at any club folding.

I can't understand either why any normal person would be happy to see a football club fold, but as we all know Matt isn't normal!

Haha, sorry, I'll hear a remark like that from almost anybody, but from somebody from Glossop!!!! That's the height of a pot and kettle colour interface situation!

I have my reasons for being gleeful about the demise of Formby Football Club, I'm not going to list them here, but suffice to say that if you don't pay the piper, you will eventually pay a much steeper price! Formby have now paid that price!

Fortunately, it feels like the polar opposite of your interpretation!
