Just seen that ex Frickley keeper Andy Carney is assistant manager at Maltby Main. Was brilliant for Stocksbridge Park Steels
but seem to lose his form in a Blues shirt. I remember him playing as a striker in a Sheffield Senior Cup match at Parkgate.
His sheer size drew many comments from the Parkgate fans that night and quite a few couldn't understand why he wasn't
between the sticks as he had always played brilliantly against their side. Wasn't the worst Frickley forward I've seen by a long
way too.
Who was Frickley's best keeper? Personally, I liked Roger Chapman and Henry Smith. Tommy Meehan might get a few mentions,
a Blues' legend but was dodgy by the time he played for Denaby United, probably went on one season too many. Jon Hood might
not be the best ever but he had his moments and has never let the club down and is there if required.

I'm sure Hoody will be happy that you mentioned him, We've had some good un's over the years...Tommy Meehan wasn't the biggest, also Ian Wardle wasn't either, but both excellent stoppers. I would put Ben Simpson up there with them as the best keepers.
I can't remember Smith playing, my memory don't stretch that far, i remember Paul Maxted ?, also who was the keeper we had that was caught kerb crawling around Donny, an ex pro ?.

Frickley have had many good keepers in the past. Jamie Booth 1990-92 (went to Blackpool), Nigel Yarrow who played in early 90s a good shot stopper I remember him playing a blinder at Southport. Henry Smith went on to play for Scotland. Going back further, Roy Vairy comes to mind (played against Notts County and South Shields in FA Cup 1 rnd matches) . Brian Ryalls (ex Sheff Wed). In the old Midland League days three keepers come to mind. One called Hacket was sold to Boston United. Two others, namely Brendan McManus (ex Bradford City) played when Harry Gregg was at the other end with Donny reserves, Ted Williams (ex Rotherham) played in the days when a certain MacDonald was Centre half. McManus and Williams took everything out (including defenders) when coming for crosses. MacDonald a hard man who attackers feared. Another keeper, who died a few years ago was Mick Brannan who was on Arsenal books just before the 1939 war.
The first keeper I saw was Frank Wildeman (ex Huddersfield Town) v Gainsborough 1947.

Certainly been a strong position for the club. I like Ben Simpson a lot and Adam Nicklin, though he could have
done with being more vocal and forceful with the defence. Forget the name of the veteran keeper in Gary Marrow's
time at Frickley, became his number two at Stocksbridge - very consistantly good. Maxted was good. Henry Smith
didn't play many games for the Blues but it was obvious he was going to make a name for himself - a legend at
Hearts. Paul Norton wasn't bad but was a lot better for Worksop. Jamie Booth was very good too.

Gary Ingham, he was around 57 years old, but was good under Marrow when we finished 2nd :D

Andy Carney was at Ossett Albion when they first joined the Unibond, i remember him getting some verbal off some Workington fans, he jumped over the barrier to confront them but common sense prevailed and he climbed back over onto the pitch.

Nigel Yarrow was at Albion many years, before John Hood joined Albion.

Paul Norton played a few games for Ossett Town about 1991, before quickly moving on.

paul norton was from warmsworth in donny, played a couple of years for denaby utd towards the end of his career before joining gainsborough as back up keeper and ended up playing in the fa cup first round tie at brentford,a nice kid he was too.
remember seeing andy carney play upfront as a sub, certainly gave the defenders something to think about,i reckon rinky should have tried hoody upfront from the bench a few times last season.

I used to go to Sheffield United reserves with Paul Norton's dad when his son was in the youth team at Bramall Lane.
Paul's father originally from the Conisbrough area and was involved with Denaby United just before they finished. Paul
played for a lot of football clubs but is probably most associated with his spells at Worksop Town, where he had some kind
of computer business/shop. Paul's dad coached the Edlington White Stars for a period and may have played for Denaby
himself at some level, not sure which, he rarely talked about himself. In a wheelchair and unable to walk and not looking
very well at all the last time I saw him on King George's field at Warmsworth. ( where Warmsworth cricket club play) Warmsworth
just up the road from Balby, less than a mile from where I live.

That's very sad news about Colin (Norton). I always found him to be a bit of a character, as a friend of mine said "he was very knowledgeable and very entertaining". If you don't mind Blade I may copy the post on our forum as I'm sure many of our fans would be interested in it.

It upset me to see Colin looking so poorly, think he may have had a leg amputated. I knew he was struggling health
wise some months before and due for an operation. Liked to talk football, I had a few chats with him in The Cecil at
Warmsworth and found him to be good company. One for football rumours. Most of them being true. Colin and his
wife well liked in Warmsworth.
Okay by me if you use these posts, Finchley Tiger.
Haven't seen him for a long time, I hope he is still talking football to some one.
