This Saturday 31 October we welcome Armthorpe Welfare to the KGV in the First Round Proper of the FA Vase.

We have already met each other 5 times and the Priorymen have won 2 games with 1 draw and Welfare winning 2 times.

We won our first encounter which was in the FA Cup with Ray Hankin scoring both goals in a 4 minute spell and winning 2-0 in August 1987.

We then won our Vase encounter in a thrilling game that earned us the performance of the round award in 2008. The game finished 6-3 after extra time at Armthorpe after a 3-3 draw at full time. The team that took the field were John Mohan, Gareth Murphy, Darren Paul, Mark James, Jack Proctor, Nicky Mohan, Marty O’Riordan, Ritchie Storr, David Onions, Luke Bythway and Liam McPhillips.

Marty O’Riordan scored first on 14 minutes but a couple of minutes later Henry Sibenge levelled. John Mohan was injured on the half hour and Lee Farrington came on with Mark James volunteering to wear the gloves. Ritchie Storr gave Town the lead again with a curling shot into the top of the goal a minute before the break.

On 68 minutes James and Sibenge clashed and Jammo came off worse but gallant as he is, he managed to soldier on and soon after David Onions had a goal disallowed for offside. Welfare then scored on 77 minutes and 6 minutes later Nicky Mohan conceded a penalty which James could not save and the Welfare were in the lead at 3-2. Onions forced extra time when 5 minutes before the whistle his goal was allowed to stand.

The prescribed half hour demonstrated that Guisborough Town were by far the strongest team when Storr scored a few minutes into the extra time followed by a brace of goals by Onions whose hat trick made a very convincing 6-3 win away from home.

The last 3 games we have not managed to beat the Welfare when in 2010-11 we lost at home 3-0 in the FA Cup and last season we drew 1-1 at the KGV thanks to a Danny Earl goal but then drew 2-2 away after Callum Martin and Adam Gell (both now at Whitby Town) scored and we were beaten on penalties 3-2.

Great game today where Town won convincingly 8-0 and will post the official report when released.

It was obviously a one sided game with the Priorymen building on a 2-0 interval lead with total domination.

I wish Armthorpe all the best for the rest of the season and really enjoyed the times i have visited theirs in earlier games.

I was disappointed at the reaction of Ben Muirhead who clearly did not set a good example for his club or non league football in general when after an obvious foul he proceeded to swear at the referee in full earshot of kids etc and being an ex professional one would hope he would appreciate the need to set a good example...maybe not?

The good news is we are in Round 2 and eagerly await Monday's draw!!!

Great result well done lads. Hopefully we'll get a decent draw tomorrow. Guizzy are well overdue a decent vase run so who knows, maybe this season will be the one.
