Saturday 8th September and we welcome Newcastle Benfield to the KGV with a 3pm kick off.

We have, so far, played them 4 times in the League but only won once.

The last time the Lions visited us here at the KGV was last August in our very first game back in the top flight. They scored 4 goals whereas we could only reply with one goal by Luke Bythway.

On New Year Bank Holiday Monday, Guisborough had an excellent 3-2 away win at Newcastle Benfield, who finished the game with nine men.

Before that it was in the League Cup in January 2008 and the 0-2 defeat ended our cup run when a goal in each half by Brian Dodsworth and Ian Graham saw them progress to play Shildon in the next round.

In the season we were relegated from the First Division they did the double over us with a 1-2 at the KGV on 18th August 2004 and a 4-1 drubbing at theirs on 11th January 2005.

Newcastle Benfield were promoted to the First Division at the end of the 2003-04 season as Newcastle Benfield Saints and got their first ever Division One win in August 2004 at the KGV despite us opening the scoring, but two goals from Woodhouse saw them take all three points.

So to recap Newcastle Benfield WON their first ever Division One game and it was against us and on our return Guisborough Town LOST our first Division One match after promotion to Newcastle Benfield.

LEAGUE STATS

Guisborough Town

Played 3 won 2, lost 1 = 6pts

Hoping that some of the folk who enjoyed the game against Darlington will return and cheer the Priorymen..

Come along and bring a friend or 1349?

Another good win today I thought. It was always going to be a tricky match because NB are a decent club and after Wednesday night we could have lost concentration, but we never!

I was surprised that Benfield pumped the ball upfield as much as they did, but our defence coped admirably well, and it really looks now as if we have an organised team. A deserved clean sheet for Ben, and a workmanlike all round display. Nice one! :D

Saturday 8th September 2012

Guisborough Town 1 Newcastle Benfield 0 HT (Austin Johnston)
Guisborough Town 1 Newcastle Benfield 0 FT

Ben Escritt, Paul Roddam, Craig Bishop, Lee Bythway, Adam Gell, Gary Wood, Lewis Wood, Austin Johnston, Liam McPhillips, Luke Bythway, Liam O'Sullivan. Subs: Jake Matthews, Nathan Evans (on for McPhillips), Jack Connor (on for Lewis Wood), Joel Guy (on for Gell), Nathan Steel,

Today was the day that Guisborough Town nudge into the top ten at number 9 with 9 points out of a possible 12 after winning three League games. They have also won three home games in a row starting with the FA Vase win last Saturday against Crook with the winning goal by Austin Johnston. The dynamo Ozzie opened and closed the scoring midweek in the 4-1 victory over Darlington 1883.

Guisborough took advantage of the home surface and had most of the possession in the first half so it was no surprise after early shots by brothers Lee then Luke Bythway that in the last 10 minutes none other than Austin Johnston collected a long ball by Luke Bythway to put past the keeper Andrew Grainger.

Benfield applied more pressure in the Second half but just like Wednesday the team soaked it up like a sponge and all worked together to deny any chances of a leveller and once more pushing to double the lead. Gary Wood won the man of the match and Guisborough won all three points when the whistle blew with the score remaining 1-0.

Chris Hardy reflected after the game "this was a game that I thought we controlled from start to finish and ran out worthy winners. The game for me was more pleasing than the Darlington victory midweek given the fact it would have been easy for our lads to show complacency after the eventful evening the other night, but again we showed a willingness to work for one another and a real good attitude to what was asked of the lads".

Guisborough Town now prepare for the long trip over to Cumbria on Tuesday night aiming to keep the pressure on especially as they then have a gap from League football due to the Vase and League Cup games.

Nice report John. We can go to Penrith with a spring in our step and hopefully come back with 3 points because on paper at least, (of course football is not played on paper), this is the easiest of our recent league games! :D

Nice report Mark. Benfield are no mugs but it was an excellent defensive display by our lads and we deserved the win.
