Once more the two Towns do battle and this time its the FA Cup which is great way to kick off the season.

Our last visit was back on Saturday 22nd January 2011 where the score was level at half time with goals by Bulmer and Onions.
Earlier in the season Ozzie Johnston had won the game for us but was on the bench until the second half and immediately he made a huge difference.

In the first few minutes of the restart an excellent ball from Luke Bythway found Ozzie in the box but his shot sailed over the bar. Not to be disheartened he made a nuisance of himself when Shane Henry crossed for Ozzie and this time he made no mistake hitting the target to score the winning goal. Just as Guisborough had pulled off a masterstroke with the substitution, Northallerton introduced Darren Mowbray to replace centre forward Mitchell and Guisborough Town spent the next 15 minutes under tremendous pressure.

Northallerton Town 1 Guisborough Town 2

The result helped us gain promotion but today both teams will be looking for a result to win £1000 and get into the next round where the winners visit Whitehaven or Shildon.

Sun shining and not a cloud in the sky - no excuses for a day out in Northallerton.

Saturday 11th August 2012

Northallerton Town 2 Guisborough Town 1 HT (Billy Blackford)
Northallerton Town 4 Guisborough Town 5 FT (Adam Gell (2), Lewis Wood, Austin Johnston)

Ben Escritt, Jack Connor, Liam O'Sullivan, Lee Bythway, Mark Casey, Adam Gell, Michael Jameson, Austin Johnston, Billy Blackford, Nathan Steel, Liam McPhillips. Subs: Jonathan Harris, Jake Matthews, Ryan Foster, Lewis Wood (on for Blackford 65), Joel Guy (on for Gell 85)

Several first teamers missing including Luke Bythway, Gary Wood and Paul Roddam and some of today's squad had to be assessed prior to the game. One of these was Austin Johnston who had scored in the last two Guisborough Town victories over the hosts Northallerton Town.

The first half hour probably went in Guisborough's favour but many offside calls were made especially with Billy Blackford's runs so it was a surprise when Northallerton took the lead after Mark Casey was cautioned and a penalty awarded for a push in the final 10 minutes of the first session. Ben Escritt managed to stop the ball from Adam Emson getting past him but Emson was quicker on the rebound and knocked the ball in at the second attempt. Five minutes later and Escritt came out to meet the attack when a ball from Colin Anderson found James Bolam who slotted home and it was 2-0 to Northallerton. As the game approached injury time it was the turn of James Briggs to leave his area to chase down a speedy Billy Blackford running from the halfway line who had beat the offside trap. Billy's long range shot along the ground slowly made its way goalward bound as a defender tried to get his foot to it before it went over the goal line. Briggs and Billy could only watch the ball rolling along until it did indeed hit the target and Guisborough were back in the game at 2-1.

Ten minutes into the second half and ex Northallerton player Lee Bythway levelled only for the assistant to declare it offside and two minutes later Colin Anderson once more found Adam Emsom made it 3-1 from a very tight angle. Time for some changes just after the hour when new signing Lewis Wood came on for Billy Blackford. Shortly afterwards with twenty five minutes remaining Adam Gell's nicely taken shot beat Briggs and 3-2. With quarter of a hour left super sub Lewis Wood drew the keeper out and scored his first goal for the Priorymen to level the game at 3-3. Five minutes later and a superb cross from Liam O’Sullivan to Adam Gell put Guisborough in the lead for the first time at 3-4 before being taken off to be replaced by Joel Guy. With only a few minutes of normal time Colin Anderson gave the hosts a lifeline and some people were thinking about the replay. One person who did not have a replay in his mind had to be Austin Johnston who on the stroke of fulltime leapt up from nowhere to meet Liam McPhillip’s cross and headed in what was to be the winning goal although with 5 minutes of added time due to the time taken for the 9 goals and subsitutes it was a tense affair for both teams until the final whistle blew.

We thank Northallerton for their hospitality before, during and after the game, always a great club to visit and lovely touch having the patio area on a warm summer afternoon. We wish them well in their season and now look forward to visiting Shildon in a fortnight after the Railwaymen beat Whitehaven 6-0.

Well that was some game, wasn't it? An FA Cup tie, the first competitive match of the season for both clubs, so it was always going to be a lottery really.

Well done to The Priorymen for never giving up, although we all know we need to step up considerably more to match the big boys in the NL1. We were rather fortunate to have won this one, we won't do against the majority of division one clubs with more of the same.

Credit to Northallerton for giving us a real match and a real fright, they're a fantastic club with good natured fans and a smashing ground. I hope they go up so we can play them again next season. Mind you Allerton, Guizzy Town IS part of the North Riding, so not too sure about the Yorkshire chants. ;-)

We are very much North Riding of Yorkshire and have won the North Riding Senior County Cup several times :)

Priorymen on Cloud Nine after last-gasp
5-4 victory in FA Cup Thriller

Guisborough Town couldn’t have come up with a better way to cement a successful partnership with away kit sponsors Cleveland Land Services than to win their first FA Cup Preliminary match this season wearing their eye-catching new blue away strip.

The new kit was launched in a thrilling match to watch as the Priorymen fought their way back from 3-1 down just after half time to battle successfully through to the next Preliminary Round after an amazing second half at Northallerton Town which saw no fewer than half a dozen goals.

The two North Yorkshire sides enjoyed a see-saw of a game, but Guisborough Town’s Austin Johnston scored the winning ninth goal with a bullet header at the end of 90 minutes to just shade the game 5-4 to the visitors and secure Guisborough a place in the next round of the national FA Cup competition.

The draw has already been made and the Priorymen of Guisborough Town now play the Railwaymen of Shildon Town on 25th August at Shildon.

Chris Hardy, the Guisborough Town manager, commented: “On reflection, this felt a lot like a pre-season game, with a very warm summer afternoon and a game that seemed to be littered with mistakes from both sides who were no doubt feeling a little rusty after the close-season lay-off.

“It was very pleasing for us to get off to a winning start and we now look forward to Hebburn Town away this coming Saturday in our first League match,” added Chris.

Our kits are class this season!! I might get the away one for Claire as she likes it too. :D

Really looking forward to Hebburn but it'll be a tough one as they'll be up for this, what with it being their first game in NL1 for some time. Hopefully we'll do what Benfield did to us last season and give them a Divison 1 footballing lesson! :D
