A dream second half debut for Ash Lavan contributed to Town reaching the last sixteen of the Ernest Armstrong Cup. A goal inside a minute into his introduction for the second half and another strike a minute from full time, plus a goal for fellow substitute Daniel Maddison was enough to see off a spirited Easington side. It was an accomplished performance on the road and there can be no complaints on who was the better side on the night. Town will now entertain Jarrow in the next round with a provisional date set for Tuesday, November 6th.

With Barry Oliver away, Paul Edwards was in sole charge and ‘Eddy’ made several changes from the previous weekend. Mark Dixon & Stephen Oakley slotted back into the side while Luke Hogan replaced the injured Elliott Beddow. Kyle Morris played in Jamie Davis position meaning Jamie was asked to play upfront for the unavailable Craig Hutchinson. There were several surprises in Easington’s line up with no Jack Pounder or Liam Adamson involved.

In the opening exchanges, both sides looked impressive in keeping possession and chances were limited - the best of which went to Arthur Connelly who fired wide after cutting in from the right wing. At the other end Oliver Simpson got down smartly to keep out Ethan Wood’s stinging drive from all of twenty five yards. Luke Hogan was having a fascinating battle on the left with Daniel Martin culminating in Martin receiving a yellow card for pulling Hogans shirt off his back after a mesmerising spin and turn move. The pair would continue to go toe-to-toe with Martin winning several crunching tackles but also with Hogan beating his man on several occasions. Town should have taken the lead on thirty seven minutes. Davis flighted corner dropped perfectly for Morris but his nodded down header went wide. As half time approached, Billingham were now on top. Another Davis corner was only half cleared to Dixon who looked certain to score but Keith Finch superbly got a hand to the left backs strike and Brandon Kirkbride’s follow up was somehow deflected over the crossbar.

As planned beforehand, Ash Lavan & Danny Maddison came on for Kyle Morris & Matty Hughes respectively. And the changes brought instant reward for returning hero Lavan! Goalkeeper Finch spilled the ball while trying to collect and LAVAN pounced, turned, fired and scored! The lead only lasted for all of two minutes. Right back Ryan LINCOLN-BARROW forced his way into the box despite a sea of blue shirts in the vicinity and blasted home into the roof netting. The hosts, boosted by the goal came close again when David Vincent ghosted into the box but volleyed wide. A fine move involving Connor, Kirkbride and Connelly ended with Maddison seeing his close range effort rebound back off the post while Wood came inches away from striking the crossbar from twenty yards. Town regained the lead on seventy one minutes and it was another substitute who would get an assist. Lee Moore’s long throw in was poorly defended and as the ball took an unexpected high bounce, MADDISON rose highest to head home. With time running out, Easington went in search for an equaliser but it was Town who extended their lead to kill the tie. Dixon picked out Davis run on the left hand side - Davis pulled the ball back for the onrushing LAVAN who drove home from close range. It was a good cup performance from Billingham in a competitive game but the visitors class told in the end.

Simpson, Kirkbride, Dixon, Hughes (Maddison), Oakley (c), Summers, Connelly, Connor, Davis, Morris (Lavan), Hogan (Moore).
Unused: Hillerby.
