BILLINGHAM TOWN (1) 2 WEST ALLOTMENT CELTIC (1) 1
Robinson 12 Baxter 21
Summers 53

Town’s long unbeaten run continues after a hard fought victory against an effervescent Celtic side. The Tynesider’s played some impressive football during the first half but once Town got to grips with their attacking system in the second period, there was only ever going to be one winner. Today’s victory was yet another indicator of Billingham Town’s resilience and tactical know how. This fixture had the potential to be a classic and although the game didn’t reach such lofty heights, Town made sure they did enough to get the points and put pressure on the sides above them in the table. This season, Town’s counter attacking style has produced week in week out but today the standout players were in central defence. Stephen Oakley and Kris Summers were superb, particularly Summers who took a gash to the head in the early exchanges - scored the winning goal and then put in a heroic last ditch tackle in injury time to deny West Allotment an equaliser. Such moments can define a season - another battle won - another crucial three points!

Barry Oliver & Paul Edwards made four changes to the line up that defeated Birtley in the Vase. Mark Dixon was out with an ankle injury which meant Lee Moore returned to the side as a left-back while Joe Hillerby and Jamie Davis were handed starts. Oliver Simpson was away so Jack Patton stood in for the ex Thornaby goalkeeper. Both sides had good opportunities in the opening ten minutes. Michael Baxter fired wide for the visitors and at the other end Dan Flounders rattled the crossbar from inside the box while Craig Hutchinson saw his follow up saved by seventeen year old Finlay Hodgson. Town took the lead on twelve minutes despite being down to ten men as Summers went off for a head wound. Hutchinson played a clever one-two with Flounders leaving the forward time and space on the right hand side to pick out Matty ROBINSON who tucked home from close range. Another flowing move between Davis, Flounders, Hutchinson and Jack Connor ended with Connor firing over from twenty yards. With Town on the front foot, West Allotment equalised on twenty one minutes with an exquisite finish from BAXTER. Matthew Hayton showed good strength to cut in from the right to find Baxter in a central position. The diminutive right winger switched the ball from his left foot to his right and stroked the ball into the bottom corner. The Town supporters took exception to Baxter’s goal celebration but it seemed harmless enough. Baxter, Hayton and Regan Patterson were causing problems with their quickness of thought and pace. Their best chance of taking the lead came via a long ball forward where Hayton won the aerial flick on but Patterson fired wide from a good position.

Baxter wasted no time in trying to influence the game further with an enticing cross that forced Oakley to clear over his own crossbar. Town are always dangerous at set pieces and they regained the lead eight minutes into the second half. From a free-kick, Joe Hillerby flighted the ball to the back post where Oakley towered over his marker to head the ball across goal towards his defensive partner and SUMMERS headed home to score his second goal in successive games. Billingham were now dominating the midfield as chances in Towns third became non existent. Robinson fired over from twenty yards and Hutchinson was only inches away from getting on the end of Robinson’s left wing cross. With time running out, the visitors eventually pushed for a late equaliser. Patterson shot straight at Patton after good work from Baxter and in the dying seconds, Summers acrobatically denied Bruno Mendes Corriera with a timely challenge. Town held on for a vital win with a busy October on the horizon. Meanwhile, Oaks and Summers - continue to blossom in the Autumn sunshine!
