BILLINGHAM TOWN (0) 1 NORTHALLERTON TOWN (1) 1
Hutchinson 70 Walker 34

Billingham came close to losing their unbeaten tag to their old foe but remain undefeated seven games into the season. However the main talking points revolve around the controversial refereeing decisions where Billingham were denied two straightforward looking penalties. The first appeal for handball was turned down even though the defender had two arms raised to his chest and the second for a sliding challenge on Dan Flounders inside the box. Despite decisions going against them, Billingham still managed to find a way back into the game with a Craig Hutchinson header. A defeat would have been incredibly harsh but on reflection, a point was a fair result. A superb crowd of 287 witnessed a tactical battle in which Northallerton edged the first half but the second was played mostly inside Northallertons own half. With The hosts missing Luke Hogan, Elliott Beddow, Reece Kenney and Matty Robinson on the bench, Dan Flounders & Dom Joynes were asked to play in attacking positions while Matty Hughes made his home debut after starting against Washington. Lee Moore returned to the starting eleven as did Mark Dixon and Jamie Davis.

The opening twenty five minutes was a classic case of two sides showing each other plenty of respect but the turning point came on the half hour mark. Hutchinson created space for himself outside the box and his goal-bound effort struck Dean Elgie on his hands as the the defender raised his arms towards his rib cage. Elgie was inside the box but incredibly, Michael Andrews indicated that the centre half was protecting his chest! Four minutes later and Northallerton broke the deadlock with a fine move through the middle. Elliott McGlade, who was a real handful in the first half found Chris Emms and the ex Town & Synner released Richie WALKER who beat the onrushing Oliver Simpson. Billingham reacted straightaway with Davis firing over inside the box after Kris Summers shot was blocked and before half time, Dom Joynes saw his strike deflected wide for a corner.

Undoubtedly, Billingham had played nowhere nearly to their potential in the first half but they raised their game for the majority of the second period. The home supporters must of thought it wasn’t going to be their night when Andrews waved away another penalty appeal on fifty minutes. Davis had powered his way into the box and found Flounders lurking on the right hand side. As Flounders tried to cut inside, the makeshift winger got taken out by Karl Hewitt with an uncontrolled challenge. Undeterred, Hutchinson later struck the outside of the post with a free kick from twenty five yards while Dixon followed that by finding the goal stanchion from the same distance. Stephen Oakley had a free header saved by Tom Dawson but the equaliser finally came with twenty minutes left on the clock. Brandon Kirkbride was introduced to the fray as a right back, allowing Moore the opportunity to push forward and it was his perseverance and precise cross that allowed HUTCHINSON to head home at the back post. For the first time in the game, Northallerton looked rattled as Billingham searched for a winner. Moore headed over from Flounders cross but as time ebbed away, Northallerton should have scored in added on time. Chris Dickinson won the aerial flick on allowing Steve Cheeseman the chance to volley home but the midfielder somehow fired wide. It was a lucky escape but the way the game unfolded, it was a stroke of luck the hosts deserved.

Definitely not penalties from where I was stood . Decent game against two good teams . Great to see a good crowd in , it would be like that every week if you merged with Synthonia, which I’m sure the none league people of Billingham will arrange one day :D

We have photo evidence that suggests otherwise. Particularly the handball. The second foul...at least 200 fans thought it was a penalty!

As long as Billingham Town is a well run club there will never be a need to merge. Billingham people don't want it...only fans of non league clubs.

Blatant penalties. The handball the lad lifted his hand up to his chest to block the ball. The foul looked like the ball was well past the man when he slid in and took our player out but we'll see on the video.

Crowd of 287. Same fixture on a Friday night a couple of seasons ago was about 180 so we're doing something right at Town. Also had nearly 200 there last Saturday as well.

Ground look great , in fact it’s one of the best in both Divisions. Even allowed drink out side , take note Chester le Street .

Looks like improvements being made all the time .

Thanks Wack, a lot of work has been put in by the volunteers to get it to where it is. Hopefully a few more crowds like last night will help boost the coffers to spend a bit more cash where it's needed!

We wanted to get into the Northern League in order to PLAY BOTH Billingham Town and Billingham Synthonia.

its a shame to see where Synners are now, maybe it would be a good thing thing to merge with Town, especially if they stay technically homeless and bottom of the league

People only ever mention a merge when synners are struggling but not Town.. Nobody ever says...Town should merge with synners when they won the Durham cup two years in a row!!

If Synners wanted to merge then they'd have been in touch, but it's obvious it's not something they're interested in. End of conversation really.

At the minute Synners are stable. But could do with more sponsorship. Everyone at the club, whats left of them, want to return to Billingham at the end of the season. The fight is on to achieve that... no matter where in Billingham it is.... Last season a merger seemed like a great idea in my eyes but was never going to happen. New people with new ideas need to be involved at the club but so far nothing seems to change.

The only place for a feasible return could be the rugby club.
