Tomorrow’s Cleator Cup game between Marske United and Dunston UTS has been cancelled.
Marske have not been able to register sufficient players with the Evo Stik Northern Premier League in time for the game.
A spokesman for the Ebac Northern League said:
“We are obviously very disappointed and apologise for the lateness of this news but we were left with no alternative but to cancel the game.”

Is it not mandatory to have so many players signed on by a certain date, I am sure it is in the Northern League, and I seem to think that date was a couple of weeks ago. Perhaps its different in the Evostick ?

Should be awarded to Dunston by default

Yes, Wack it is. Normally 7 days prior to the start of the season. So, for the Evo-Stik League that is August 11th, for the Northern League it is July 28th. So the Northern League have imposed their League rules on a club that is no longer a member of the Northern League.

Ok then.

Regardless of differing league rules I would have thought players should have been signed on long before now. Most clubs have.

From the league:

"Cleator Cup: As the Cleator Cup is a formal, competitive fixture, FA rules require all players to be registered, regardless of any deadlines for the registration of players for league fixtures."

Couldn’t the NL send a reminder beforehand to Marske to avoid this happening?

Not jumping to Marske’s defence here, Maybe this was an oversight on their behalf as the Evo-Stick league doesn’t kick off for another three weeks?.

It might also help if the league tightened up its rulebook:

http://www.northernfootballleague.org/w ... or_Cup.pdf

The first paragraph just explains who Jim Cleator was, and the second is mainly concerned with when the match is played. There’s nothing about who can and can’t play.

As the NL1 champions will be invariably being promoted in coming seasons, would it not make more sense to reconfigure the cup so it will always be between sides under NL governance?

I can quite understand why sides about to embark on a season at a new level would want to avoid a fixture like this.

Was going to post something similar. I don't see the point in getting upset about it, they are under a different jurisdiction with a later season start date. It's not a Northern League game.

Interested if any other league at step 5 has a similar game involving departing champions?

The North West Counties League version went ahead on Saturday, Runcorn Linnets v Widnes. Strangely, both sides had been promoted out of the league, as champions and runners up respectively.

With both teams able to field trialists thus meaning they were allowed to play players who weren't registered with the club.
