Town hosted Teesside rivals Marske United on an unfamiliar Thursday night and a fixture that in recent pre seasons, had previously been held at Mount Pleasant. Tonight’s fare was Town’s penultimate friendly before the ‘proper’ stuff begins on August 4th while Marske were preparing for life in the evo-stik league and a Cleator Cup fixture against Dunston at the weekend. For all intents and purposes, Billingham’s pre season has been a successful one with the notable high fitness levels to go along with the positive results on show but joint manager Barry Oliver has never been one to be too enamoured with such results. However, Oliver must have been impressed with tonight’s display and Marske provided another stern challenge. Town decided to field a strong starting eleven with several trialists added to the squad, hoping to impress the home management.

The game kicked off under hot and humid conditions with the threat of thunderstorms but if anything, it was Town who showed lightning efficiency, striking twice in the opening twenty minutes. Jack Connor created the first goal from central midfield allowing Elliott Beddow to use his electrifying speed and then beating the keeper with a cool finish. And then Hutchinson intercepted a lazy defensive pass to double Town’s lead. Marske eventually began to have more possession but it was Town who were creating the better chances. Connor fired wide from the edge of the box and Beddow came close to a duplicate goal, similar to his first but his attempt drifted away from goal. As expected, Marske tried to force the play in the second half with Jamie Owens the danger man. The former Stockton striker saw one effort land on the goal netting while Town’s trialist goalkeeper denied him on two separate occasions. The away side found it difficult in breaking down a stubborn, organised and impressive Town rearguard and yet Hutchinson came close to extending the lead with an audacious back flick but the ball went agonisingly wide. Billingham were well worth the victory and will now prepare for Tuesday nights friendly against York City’s U20’s.

Town squad:
Trialist, Moore, Dixon, Oakley, Summers, Kenney, Beddow, Hughes, Hutchinson, Connor, Joynes. Subs used: Flounders, Hogan, Maddison, Kirkbride, Trialist, Trialist.

Dixon? Is that Mark Dixon, in his mid/late 40s now?

It is a Mark Dixon but must be a different one to who you're thinking of. He's in his early 20's, been with us a couple of years now.
