It's as big as any other, apart from perhaps the South West which also has to contend with the poorest road network:

That map is out of date. Apart from Penrith, every other club in the Northwest plays in the NWCL. So if you take Penrith out of the mix, the most northerly club is Ashington & the most southerly is Northallerton. Which is a massive 71 miles & 1 hour 24 minutes travelling. These clubs aren’t even in the same division.
As an example of step 5/6 league footprints. The Eastern Counties league stretches from Wisbech St Mary’s to Holland. That is 104 miles & 2 hours 15 minutes travelling.
The Midlands Football League stretches from South Normanton to Hereford(Westfield). That is 120 miles & 2 hours 24 minutes travelling.
The Northwest Counties League stretches from Carlisle to Oswestry. That is 170 miles & 2 hours 51 minutes travelling.
The Northern Counties East League stretches from Bridlington to Shirebrook. That is 96 miles & 1 hour 59 minutes travelling.
So if Knaresborough joins the NL next season. The longest journey would be to Ashington & that is 94 miles & 1 hours 47 minutes travelling. But it’s only 28 miles to Northallerton & 37 minutes travelling. Harrogate RA are the next nearest & they are only 4 miles from Knaresborough.

For some Northern League clubs, Knaresborough would be slightly less travelling than is Penrith.

But they are in the Northern League so you can't. Otherwise I take your point

It’s not that bad from Penrith to Knareborough. It’s 85 miles & 1 hour & 37 minutes travelling.
With Penrith in the NL1, it opens up the possibility that if Carlisle City or Cleator Moor Celtic are promoted from the NWCL1N. Then the FALC could easily place them in the NL1. The travelling to Northallerton from there is 108 miles & 2 hours & 15 minutes travelling.
Carlisle to Northallerton is 87 miles & 1 hour & 43 minutes travelling.

Will it be a bye for Shildon or do the FA give the place to the next cab off the rank who didn't qualify ?

According to the league website:

A spokesman for the Ebac Northern League said:
“We’re disappointed that Team Northumbria has resigned from the league, in particular with a decision so close to the season.
“The management committee meets later this month and this will obviously be discussed then.”

On the same page:
17/07/18 Team Northumbria v West Allotment Celtic 7:00 pm FRIENDLY

According to Twitter:
West Allotment FC ‏@wacfc Jul 15
Next up @wacfc Will face @TNmensfootball at Coach lane (NE7 7TT) 1900 kick off Tuesday 17th July.

Am I the only person who is confused by these?

Team North still have a team just not a NL team. I was told they are still competing in the college leagues

Ipresume that if they receive a fine for their late withdraw they will not be aloud to play anywhere until the fine is paid.

Possibly yes, but I also don’t think that will be an issue

Newbiggin have folded from the Alliance Premier league now.

I have also been told there is meetings on-going etc and they are looking to promote someone from the first division into the premier league and from the 2nd to 1st.

interesting if this does happen after the FA didn't allow any movements in the NL after Team Norths resignation.

The Northern League management committee are meeting next week, in relation to Team Northumbria.
Just as a side issue, Leyton Athletic(formerly Wadham Lodge) were this week reprieved from the Eastern Senior League(step 6) & will play in the Essex Senior League(step 5). Whether this is what might happen in the NL is pure speculation. But it might be an indication!
