40 years ago today a Northern League side became the last ever winners of one of English football’s long lost and forgottten cup competitions.

Northern League Runners Up Blyth Spartans drew 1-1 at home to Third Divison Champions Wrexham in front of a 5,333 crowd packed into Croft Park to claim The Debenhams Cup 3-2 on aggregate.

This long forgotten cup was never played again after that season, meaning Blyth and the league hold a unique honour in football.
This is the story of that long lost competition:

What type of competition was this mate(qualification criteria)etc.can remember a few obscure cups but this is before my time

The rothmans cup, entry was all teams in leagues sponsored by rothmans

Gmac/clubcall Cup,entry was gm Vauxhall conference, northern southern and isthmian premier division clubs

Npl presidents cup, entry to reigning holders if still in league and top 7 in premier division

Competitions nobody would care about these days and players would complain we play too much!back in day they were good fun,and in terms of the clubcall and rothmans they were a chance to play clubs from other divisions that only an fa trophy run could offer

The Clubcall sounds very familiar! But back then, of course, the Trophy was open to more clubs. I think South Shields got into the Northern League First Division just after it became Vase only!

Have read of the linked article I’ve wrote about it, it explains it all.

Basically it was competed for between the two sides from outside the top two divisions of the Football League to have progressed furthest in the FA Cup.
It only ran for 2 seasons 76/77 when Chester won it and 77/78 when we won it.

Have read it explains how it came about and how it nearly never took place at all.
Take it for me it’s a good read
