The Ebac Northern League has made an application to the Football Association to extend the current deadline of May 5 by which matches must be played.
League secretary Kevin Hewitt said:
“Due to the long spell of bad weather there is an unprecedented backlog of fixtures faced by several clubs in the league.
“We have written to the FA asking them to extend the deadline by a week.
“First and foremost we are concerned about the impact on players of playing several games in quick succession. Professional players are not expected to play so many games in such a short period and we believe it is not fair to expect our players to do so.
“The backlog means extra work for the committees, volunteers and ground staff who are already doing such a fantastic job to make sure games go ahead.
“So many games can cause long-term damage to pitches. Spectators are also being asked to pay to watch three or four games within 10 days, which we believe is unreasonable.”
It is understood that other leagues in the non-league system will also be applying for an extension to the season and it is hoped that the FA’s Leagues Committee will consider requests when it next meets on April 10.

Certainly a very reasonable question. Many players will have Sunday teams who they'll be playing for also. Done it myself in the past where you're playing up to 6 games a week in April to get the fixtures in.

Why would a league with such concerns put easinginton down to play on Tuesday 17th v Esh and Wednesday 18th v blyth when rearanging fixtures understand its hard fitting games in but a bit unfair on Easington ?

Disgraceful that the northern league or any other league for that matter have to ASK,surely there is at least one brain within the F.A.system.maybe there lying on a beach somewhere unaware of the horrendous weather,or perhaps there more interested in packing there bags for the World Cup,either way it’s time they got off there backsides and did something constructive
For once.

I often say it but I never understand why the league virtually stop midweek league games towards late October. If the pitches are playable and with all clubs having floodlights then keep playing. More often than not a good number of weeks will be lost to bad weather, yes it’s been extreme this season but more games could have been played pre-xmas. August and September is relentless with games, just spread them out better across a season

Great post, its a great contrast, the local footballer expected to play 3 or 4 football games a week and work for a living and have some family time, compared to the FA octogenarians planning their free trip and what to pack to the World Cup.. Yes a free trip all paid for. suppose it gives them a break from planning Englands next friendlies at destinations they also want to visit for free.

Hopefully the Northern League are granted their request, Going to be interesting in a few years from now if we have another bad winter and the league then has Play-Offs to worry about, As most play-offs have a set dateline to work to, Which normally the first game is played within a week of the season ending.

I agree with extending the season but have to say I think Bishops only had 3 games in both January and February and that was not all down to the weather.

I know the Alliance has been extended a further week, to the 19th of May, so hopefully the NL gets extended too.

This will be counterbalanced by the fact that the league will have 2 fewer teams and therefore 4 less games to play in the season

When you think about it, why should promotion/relegation clubs gain an advantage by extending the league, Some clubs may have already played there games and may?? have spent good money on good drainage etc??, Just a thought.
