Whitley Bay have appointed former player and FA Vase winning manager from 2002, Andy Gowens as their new manager until the end of the season.
He will be assisted by Mick Mulhern, ex-Sunderland Ladies manager. Full story on the website http://whitleybayfc.com/

2002 is before my time so I don't know what to think really but their credentials are quite impressive and like the attitude of Gowens in his interview.

Also interested to hear why he'd be a poor choice?

It is an interesting appointment. I always thought of Andy as quite an ambitious manager, quite short tenures at various places moving on for bigger budgets. Not a criticism, don't know the man at all, it was just an impression.

I forget Local Lad, who was your manager when you won the championship.

What a silly statement, do you think all a manager does is bark out a few motivational words before kick off?
If you ask any of those Durham players under Lee, they had huge respect for him and he was a massive part of what they achieved..

Andy did a great job at Ashington. Inherited the worst side I've seen at Portland Park, turned it around and kept us up. Good luck to the fella at Whitley.
