Esh 1-1 West
Half Time
Penalty to Esh right on half time.

Bit of controversy for penalty as last defender brought down the player. New rule comes into play???? Depends on who you support with that one. West player sent off.

Game earlier was in danger of turning ‘ugly’ but has settled down a bit. West Allotment manager sent from dugout.

Interesting second half awaits...

Presumably the challenge wasn’t accidental then?

Well that's the thing isn't it.... Esh players/supporters didn't think it was accidental, West players/management thought it was.

The man that mattered though obviously thought it warranted a red card.

Personally I hadn't heard of the new rule until this happened. People going on about "double jeopardy". I think it just means more arguing, more controversy and there was already enough of that last night.

At the end of the day the lad was clear in on goal with no one in front of him and he was brought down by the last defender. Clear goal scoring opportunity - Straight red as far as I'm concerned. West management and players were just doing their best not to have someone sent off. As SSOT said previously, very one sided after that and spoilt the game as a contest.

Quote:
Where a player commits an offence against an opponent within their own penalty area which denies an opponent an obvious goal-scoring opportunity and the referee awards a penalty kick, the offending player is cautioned if the offence was an attempt to play the ball; in all other circumstances (e.g. holding, pulling, pushing, no possibility to play the ball etc.) the offending player must be sent off.

The following must be considered:
distance between the offence and the goal
general direction of the play
likelihood of keeping or gaining control of the ball
location and number of defenders

As always, interpretation comes into play.
