Location: Blyth - home of the famous Spartans.
Today brought the sad news that former Ashington & Blyth Spartans striker Les Mutrie had lost his long battle with cancer.

Les played in the Ashington side that reached the Amateur Cup Semi final in 1974 and later returned to the NL and joined Blyth Spartans where he won 2 NL titles and became the leagues first ever England Semi Pro international

His goal scoring feats for Blyth in 1980/81 earned him a moved to Hull City, where his record of scoring in 9 consecutive games still stands.
He went on to play for Hartlepool, Colchester & Doncaster Rovers before injury ended his career.

A true Northern League legend

RIP Les Mutrie
