Prestige Friendly Match

Home to Glossop North End F.C.

Saturday 21st July 2012

Kick Off 3.00 p.m.

On Saturday we welcome the players, officials and supporters of Glossop North End F.C. to the GER Stadium to play a pre-season friendly match.

Glossop North End currently play their football in the North West Counties League and were responsible for ending our Wembley dream in the 2008/9 season when they beat us
5 – 2 at their place in the quarter final of the F.A. Vase.

The club was founded in 1886 playing friendly matches against local teams and then joined the North Cheshire League in 1890 before turning professional in 1894 and moving to the Combination League. After finishing second then third they were accepted by the Midland League in 1896 and continued their success by finishing runners up in their first season.
In 1898 they were elected to the Second Division of the Football League and won promotion to Division One at the first attempt. Unfortunately, after changing their name to Glossop, they only lasted one season in the top flight but spent the next fifteen years in division two before finishing bottom in 1914 and failing to be re-elected. During this period the clubs chairman and benefactor was Sir Samuel Hill-Wood who was later to become chairman of Arsenal.

The onset of world war one saw all leagues closed down but in 1920 the club was re-formed and joined the Manchester League where they remained until 1957. During this period they won several cup competitions and were also crowned champions in 1928.
The Lancashire Combination was their next port of call but after nine seasons they returned to the Manchester League before becoming a founder member of the Cheshire County League Second Division in 1978. After losing the title on goal difference in 1980 they were promoted to division one.
In 1982 they became a founder member of the newly formed North West Counties League which was formed by merging the Cheshire County and Lancashire Combination Leagues.

The club marked its centenary in 1986 with a match against the mighty Arsenal but almost folded in 1990 when its then Chairman sold the ground to the Local Council and left the club with large debts.
However the present Board of Directors took over in January 1991 and, after winning promotion to Division One in 1992, they decided to change their name back to Glossop North End. There were several successes in the following years which included two successive wins in the Manchester Premier Cup Final in 1997 and 1998 which were played at Old Trafford and Maine Road. In 2001 they won the Derbyshire County Senior Cup beating Glapwell F.C. on penalties after drawing both legs of the final.

However the clubs proudest moment came in the 2008/9 season when they fought their way through to the final of the F.A. Vase. at Wembley Stadium. As a result of this great achievement, Arsenal, who they retain connections with through their former chairman Mr Hill-Wood, invited them to train at their state of the art training ground at Colney in the days leading up to the final. Unfortunately they lost the game 2 – 0 to Whitley Bay and many Marske fans were there on the day. On the way to the final they beat us 5 – 2 in a thrilling quarter final at their Surrey Street ground when hundreds of Marske fans travelled to support the team.
The clubs have remained in touch since that day and we were more than happy to agree to their request for this
pre season friendly.

So come on now and get yourself along to the GER Stadium on Saturday and get behind the players and new management team. Let’s give a warm seaside welcome to our visitors in what should be a competitive game and maybe we will get revenge for that defeat in May 2009.

We will always remember the Vase match at Surrey Street and, despite a great start for us and the final scoreline, every Glossop fan was nervous pretty much to the end of the match. The Marske support on the day was magnificent and if you have a look on the front page of our website at www.glossopnorthendafc.co.uk there is a photo of the Marske fans at that match. (If I knew how to do it I would post the picture on here - maybe daveo could have a go??).

Very much looking forward to the game MO55Y and see you on Saturday.

Really looking forward to coming to Marske on Saturday, hoping that we bring a few with us. As Glossopian has said we all remember what a great day that Vase Quarter Final at Surrey St was, Marske brought the best support we saw all season.

I will try and put the picture off our website on, hope it works.

EDIT.

Didn't know how to put the picture on, so posted a link to It!

See you Saturday.

VIVA GNE!

We've got a slide show of photo's from the game on the big telly in the clubhouse before Saturday's game.
You may be able to spot yourselves.

There will also be a free mini-matchday programme for the first 100 spectators through the gate.

See you's on Saturday.

Final result nil-nil.

A game that needed a goal to spark it of i feel, both sides absorbed spells of pressure but stale mate it ended.
Probably a fair result in the end with some good personal performances, need to carry it on to Wednesday night against which i believe will be a tough Richmond team.

Many thanks to all who purchased from the club shop. This season we decided to purchase advance stock so there's no need to wait once you've chosen which item you wanted.
This proved very popular on Saturday so we will be putting the marquee up at our friendly game against Middlesbrough for those who couldn't make Saturday.
Items can also be purchased in the usual way by contacting Janet but Janet is on her hol's for a fortnight.

On a final note many thanks to all the Glossop players, committee and supporters who made the 240 mile round trip for this friendly.
A real friendly bunch, some proper characters and a pleasure to host. :D
Since Marske last visited Glossop in the FA Vase Dave Atkinson Glossop's Chairman tell's me they have renewed their club house as well as more ground improvements. Dave has invited Marske for a pre-season friendly next year 2013 closed season so we will be looking
at organising this nearer the time and return the fixture giving Marske fans a trip out down memory lane.
Finally all the very best to Glossop for thier coming season and here's a link for anyone to keep an eye on how they are doing in their 2012/13 campaign. http://www.glossopnorthend.co.uk

See you Wednesday,

Cheers Peter C

Fair result from what I've heard.

Things are shaping up well for this season.
