Match Report: Team Northumbria produced a typically fluent display of attacking football to cruise to a 6-0 victory over Willington on Saturday.
Michael Bell and Will Preston both came into the starting line-up for Willington with Michael Brown missing and Stuart Hackett dropping to the bench.
Willington’s two previous league visits to Team Northumbria had both ended in 6-0 defeats and it wasn’t long before they were struggling again.
Less than a minute into the game Team Northumbria’s left back produced a terrific dipping volley over Cowie’s head and into the far corner to give them a 1-0 lead.
The hosts quickly settled into their rhythm with slick passing and clever movement stretching the Willington defence. They made it 2-0 when their centre forward was allowed to turn in the box to score from close range.
Their third goal came via a counter attack which resulted in their left winger firing home at the near post from a wide angle. They were 4-0 up soon after as hesitant defending allowed their wide man to round the keeper and slot home with ease.
HT: Team Northumbria 4-0 Willington
Goalkeeper, Luke Cowie, made way at half time due to injury, meaning that centre-forward Preston had to fill in in goal with Hackett coming on in midfield.
Willington improved at the start of the second half but still found themselves 5-0 down early on as a cross to the back post was nodded down for an arriving midfielder to score via a deflection.
The away side continued to work hard but the gap in class between the sides was significant and Team Northumbria completed the scoring for the day when their centre forward was put clean through on goal, drilling the ball home from the edge of the area for his second.
FT: Team Northumbria 6-0 Willington
