Report: Willington AFC lost 3-0 against Chester-Le-Street after conceding two goals within the opening ten minutes of the match.
The first goal of the game arrived inside three minutes when a long ball from Chester-Le-Street’s defence landed at the feet of Scott Heslop, his shot slid past Chris Sawyer into the bottom right corner.
The second goal followed shortly after when a cross into the box from the opposition landed for Chris Stephenson at the back post who volleyed it into the net.
Sawyer then pulled off a fantastic one-handed save to deny a third goal after a cross from the left-hand side swung in towards his back post.
An opportunity came for Willington to close the gap on the home side when Isam Mohamad’s corner met the head of captain Tom Lazonby but the attempt was cleared off the line.
Kenny Wilks showed brilliant skill down the left wing to see off two defenders and opening himself up to provide a cross into the box however the Chester-Le-Street keeper prevented the pass from troubling his goal.
After constant pressure, on the right wing, from Luke Black it paid off as he won the ball cleanly off the defender and placed it into the area but Michael Brown’s shot was held comfortably by the keeper.
A free-kick for the home side was awarded just before half-time and it would be crucial for Willington not to concede a third going into the second half.
The free-kick was cleared by a header from Lazonby, only to reach another opposition player but again the captain dealt with the shot and cleared the ball away from danger.
The second half saw great pressure from William Preston on the defender to win the ball down the left hand side. He placed a square ball into the box which the opposing player fumbled, but the loose ball deflected too far away from any Willington players to make any attempt on goal.
Luke Black sent a terrific through-ball to Michael Brown who beat the defender for pace down the right wing and into the box. Another player then imposed a challenge on Brown which Willington thought should have been a penalty, as the referee signalled for a goal-kick.
After great play from William Preston he achieved a corner for the away side. The goalkeeper only parried the ball as far as Preston who was stood within 10 yards of goal, his shot was deflected to team-mate Scott Brassel but his strike was cleared off the line.
Willington had applied continuous pressure on the opposition after conceding two early goals however it would be Chester-Le-Street who would score next.
A free-kick on the right hand side saw a header from Andrew Grant-Soulsby bounce past the left post scoring the third of the game after 75 minutes.
Another attack by Chester-Le-Street was denied by a fantastic tackle inside the area from Isam Mohamad preventing a shot on goal.
Willington had the chance to deny Chester-Le-Street of a clean sheet as a well worked throw-in saw the ball run past Michael Brown and open up space on the edge of the box for a shot. The strike was cleared as far as Mohamad who fired the ball from 25-yards only to be denied by the crossbar.
A final attempt for Willington fell again for Brown after lovely skill saw him turn past two defenders on the left but his effort saw the ball race across goal and narrowly miss the right post.
