The date for SPS v Chorley has changed, it was due to take place on Saturday August 18th, the opening day of the season.

FOLLOWING a request from Stocksbridge Park Steels, our opening game of the season will now take place on Friday August 17th at the Look Local Stadium, kick-off 7.45pm.

I'm very disappointed this has been moved to the Friday. I imagine not as many Chorley fans will want to travel down on a Friday night. Hopefully since it is the first game of the season a fair few will come. A Sunday would have been better for us but oh well. Every year we request that our first game of the season is away due to cricket still being used on the far pitch and the fence needing to be down. Not sure if it's the league or us that has c*cked this one up.

If you've no other requests, like whether playing home or away on specific bank holidays etc., then there's no reason why your request to play away first game was not granted. If you requested to be at home on New Years Day for example, then all the teams at home that day are also at home first game.

Can they not just swap the fixture with the return?

They may have done, but as has been said in another thread, the FA rules state no club can have more than 2 consecutive home league games. We're at home on the following Tues and the Saturday after that.

I'm not so much thinking about our fans (they can listen to my wonderful MagpieWatch commentary!), but more of the team, who will be finishing work on the Friday, then getting on a coach at around 4:30/5pm to play a game of football. Did SPSFC offer us the Sunday option?

Just let the Miners Arms know we're coming up on the Friday now so they can rearrange the refreshments ;)

At least whoever wins will be top of the league for a few hours!

I believe the Sunday option was asked which I think we would have preffered but since it would be 2 days before the next game, the Friday was chosen. Not sure with that FA rule. We was supposed to have 3 home games in a row in February against North Ferriby (free entry), Nantwich and Worksop. Only the weather put a stop to that. Wouldn't have minded swapping our two fixtures. Would have got 3 of the longest away trips out of the way in the first week. Chorley, Blyth and Stafford

It's always open on a Friday so no problem there.

So the same thing they have to do for any other midweek away?

I think the main point is that Chorley are team that their players have to travel on that day whereas all other teams open their campaign on a Saturday afternoon.

If this was a usual midweek fixture, then there wouldn't be an issue.

Well Done LMC

Don't think we ever ask to play New Years Dat at home. On memory I seem to remember us playing at Buxton this year. We definitely did request to play the first game away and got told "not our problem" by the league. The LMC sure knows how to help people

I'm pretty sure there's no FA rule about consecutive home games. More likely it's a general parameter our league give the fixture compiler. Over 4 weeks, it's not a problem, but it would be over 8 days and probably not desirable in less than 2 weeks.

I can't see any reason not to play Sunday rather than Friday. Certainly Marine, Worksop and ourselves have played fixtures on the Sunday (Marine as an opening fixture) due to ground unavailability and this has sometimes affected the midweek day. Mickleover played Friday last season but that was before the bank holiday

I don't understand the response re why this request was not adhered to. I shouldn't think anyone else has made the same request and even if they have, SPS have an excellent reason. If this is the only request from SPS, it's very easy to accommodate - at it's simplest, Stocksbridge and Frickley could have been swapped in the planning without a huge impact. What is the point of asking for limitations if they're going to be ignored?

The down side being that the loser slips below everyone else to the bottom of the table. :?

Maybe a draw would be best with the two sharing top spot.

Anyway, an evening kick off at SPS this time of year shouldn't be any real hardship, especially as a fair number of people seem to disappear from work early on a Friday.

Bracken Moor on a summer's evening with a playing surface good enough for cricket and pint to hand sounds good to me. 8)
