New Fordley (H) - Sat 28 Oct

Thu Oct 26, 2017 10:25 am

Next up is a home game against Division One side New Fordley in the George Dobbins League Cup.

New Fordley have had a mixed season so far but a recent manager change saw them then grab an 8-0 win in their last game and in the previous round they disposed on Premier Division side Shankhouse.

We are on the back on 3 defeats but Wednesday's performance had plenty energy and desire before going down 2-1 to Northern League side Whickham. That performance has set our standard now so it's important we aim for that level against all opposition from now on.

Kick off is 2pm and the game must be settled on the day.

Rutherford 3-2 New Fordley

Firstly it's great to be back to winning ways and also to see lads show their loyalty to Mick and the club. Just shows that the team spirit the lads have created counts for more than anything else.

The game suffered because of the strong winds but after the visitors had taken the lead, Stephen Matthew equalised before half time.

Then on the hour he scored again for his 3rd in 2 games to put us 2-1 up, shortly followed by Sam Hodgson's goal for 3-1.

New Fordley pulled a late goal back but we held out for the win that puts us in the next round, all of this without suspended captain Dan Fullen.

Everyone knows that wind spoils games but credit to our lads who took on the test and got the win, so we move on to another cup game against Hebburn Town Reserves next Friday night
