We make history on Tuesday night with our first venture into the Durham Challenge Cup Round 1.

The idea of entering originated from our former Chairman and Director, Steve Coxon, as an exercise to test our players as well as maybe making a bit cash from a lucrative away draw. Steve would certainly have got his wish as we face local neighbours Whickham so we dedicate this game in his memory.

Whickham are flying this season and sit high up in the Northern League Division Two although in their last outing they exited the FA Vase to Stockton Town.

In our last game we lost 2-1 to an impressive Ponteland Utd so this game will surely see both sides desperate to improve results.

Kick off is 7:30pm at the Glebe and this could be a cracker. Please come along and watch.

Whickham 2-1 Rutherford

An outstanding effort and excellent performance from our boys, but it just wasn't quite enough and we fell short in an entertaining game.

We started the better team and asked lots of questions of their defence but Whickham slowly started to get a hold of the game. Overall though it was evenly matched until a deep cross on 38 mins was turned in at the back post by Whickham defender John Martin.

In the 2nd half though we gave it a right good go and this created a very entertaining game, and just past the hour we grabbed an equaliser as a combination of Davidson and debutant Matthew saw the latter smash a loose ball home.
But Whickham upped their game and kept us pressed back.

Heiniger make some excellent stops and a great block by Veitch saw the ball fall to Whickham captain Jelley. And from about 25 yards he found the corner for what turned out to be the winner.

We still had chances though as home keeper Mordey made a brilliant double save and then a last gasp free kick from Matthew was kept out.

All the best to our opponents but credit goes to all of our squad for a superb effort. Whickham have been flying this season but we made them work right to the end.

Spot on mate and full marks to Rutherford who were excellent last night. If they can give Mick that tempo going forward you'll have a very good second half to the season.
