This Saturday sees the return of competitive football as we start the 2017/18 season with a home game against Newcastle University.

Last season the students had an excellent campaign and ended up finishing runners-up. However, despite this we actually took 4 points off them - a 2-1 home win and a 2-2 away draw.

Both teams will have been working hard throughout the summer so lets hope the opening game is an enjoyable one.

Rutherford 1-2 Newcastle University

A game of good quality in which the visitors will be thankful for the three points, especially where a draw was probably a fairer result.

With the first half looking to end scoreless thanks to a superb save from our keeper, we put together a great move that saw Arron Wright lash in from 19 yards to put us ahead on 43 minutes. But then a clearance from our keeper Heiniger was picked up by their midfield and he found the net from 40 yards to equaliser, despite the efforts of our defence to try and keep the lob out.

The 2nd half was just as even but just past the hour the University took the lead. Despite what looked like a foul on our keeper, the ball was kept alive out wide and the returning cross took an awful deflection off Veitch for 2-1.

We then gave it everything with Davidson going close, and then it looked like Tench was dragged back just as he was about to shoot. The referee waved away any appeals for a penalty as the University held out for the points.

Overall it was a game of high quality and very enjoyable to watch. Next up for us is a trip to Seaton Deleval on Wednesday night
