Tonight sees local neighbours Birtley Town make the short trip to Farnacres for a 6:15pm kick off.

It was way back in September when the reverse fixture was played with Birtley winning the game 3-0. Since then though, Birtley have had an up and down season since joining the Alliance from the Northern League last summer. However, they recently reached the final of the George Dobbins league Cup only to lose 1-0 to Walker Central.

Our own form has deserted us recently as we search for as many points as possible between now and the end of the season. 5 games left, 3 of them at home and although the weather has gone cold in the last few days, I'm sure tonight's game will be worth getting wrapped up for.

Free entry as always and the clubhouse will be open for hot and cold drinks and food.

Rutherford 2-4 Birtley Town

A very even first half with not much created but some excellent blocks from both sides, and it took until 40 minutes to open the scoring. A cross from the right took the slightest of flicks from a forward but that was enough for the ball to hit our defender in the face and the ball cruelly looped back across goal into the net.

However, the lead lasted less that 5 minutes as a penalty awarded for the home team saw Sam Hodgson beat the keeper for 1-1. Then less than 60 seconds later Stephen Wright charged down a keeper's clearance to see us go into the break 2-1 up.

Second half started and we looked good and were unlucky not to add to our lead. But as time wore on Birtley started to put some really good moves together and cause us problems. They grabbed their deserved equaliser on 68 minutes as the No. 9 forced a loose ball home.

Then on 85 minutes Birtley took the lead. Our defence has always been dependable but this was a mistake - maybe tired legs at the end of a tough season - and the same player slotted in from 5 yards after two of our lads got caught in a mix. Then finally, less than 60 seconds later Birtley grabbed their 4th. Apologies I have little details on it as I was still tweeting about the previous goal!

Next up is a trip to Cochrane park to play Newcastle Uni
