This Saturday is our second attempt to play a tough semi-final away to league favourites Newcastle Uni.

We're actually the only team outside the top 3 still left in the competition and this will certainly be our hardest game of the season so far. But, we've passed other tests before and go into this game just as determined.

The league game between the two sides was on the opening day of the season with the Uni winning 2-1. They are currently on a 9-game winning streak and beat Ashington Colliers 2-1 last weekend and so rightfully sit at the top of the league. A promotion to the Northern League is well within their grasp.

We, however, played Wearside League side Annfield Plain in a friendly and won 3-0. Most pleasing thing about that game though was definitely the quality of the goals scored - they were quite simply stunning!

The game will be played on the 3G surface at Coach Lane, NE12 8AD and kick off is 2pm. This will be a cracker.

Newcastle Uni 5-1 Rutherford

For the 7th time in recent seasons we left a cup competition at the semi-final stage. The game was played in a blizzard that, if there wasn't such a backlog of games, I'm sure it would most definitely have been abandoned.

In the 1st half we had gales and driving snow in our faces and as expected, the Uni kept us pinned back. But we defended well up until the 26th minute when, as the snow was at it's most fiercest, a header found the net. Our immediate response was to hit the angle with a great drive from Andy Davidson, but the score was doubled on 37 mins as a beauty from their no.7 found the top corner. The Uni lads then made it a comfortable 3 goal cushion as we struggled to deal with a bouncing ball and the elements, then at the other end Matthews went close with an overhead kick. Credit goes to our keeper though as he made a serious of excellent stops to keep the league leaders from scoring more in this half.

2nd half and you couldn't believe it, the wind dropped and the sun came out! Well, not for long! We plugged away without massively threatening until Dan Fullen headed home on the hour to get us back in the match. Fullen and Luke Watson then had long range efforts saved until a breakaway in the last few mins saw the Uni score a 4th. This sucked the wind out of our sails as tired legs saw the Uni score their last goal in the final minute.

Credit to our boys for their effort, especially the 1st half as those conditions were atrocious, the worst I've ever seen a game played in. But full credit goes to the top lads running the Uni and we wish them all the very best in the final and for their push to the Northern League. They're a credit to this league, proper football lads, them.
