The recession may have some bearing upon the drop in crowds.
However, I believe the biggest reason is the dross we often have to witness on the pitch.
I know two regular supporters over the past three seasons who have yet to be seen at a Millers match this season and a further one who has not renewed his season ticket but has been to a couple of matches. All cite the reason as being the (lack of good) football and believe me, the recession will not be an issue with any of them.
We seem to have too many players who don't seem to be prepared to put in a shift and that inevitably shows in the overall team performance and result.
Players seem to selected regularly regardless of performance (or lack of). I remember a few years ago after losing 0-2 at home to Runcorn Linnetts and a 4-1 reverse at Alsager Town in successive games, four players (Barry George, Danny Hooper and two others from memory) were shown the door.
A also remember hearing a player pleading with the manager to be allowed to go on holiday a few months later and the manager taking a dim view of the request. Football seems to be taking something of a second place in the lives of some players these days.
What we need is to be able to get hold of a couple of players who will sweat blood for the team. Lee McEvilly was a fine example of that for Warrington yesterday. He also has the pedigree to go with it as an ex-international and football league player. He totally dominated our defence and basically controlled the game until he was taken off. This has to be a better option than signing players who have been dropped like hot potatoes from most of their previous clubs.
