Are we expecting the same XI that beat Runcorn Linnets this afternoon?

Good performance, and quite a comfortable win.

Bailey, and two from Chappell.

Pretty much a carbon copy of the Linnets game with Road taking control early on, missing chances, then nailing one & after that the result was never in doubt.

Tom Bentham came in for the holidaying Matt Warburton & Gresty came in for Josh Gittings (dunno the reason). Apart from that, same side as Mondays. Martin Hill (any relation to Gordon) looks a good player - it really is great to see us playing with some width although ironically, it looks like we've narrowed the pitch...

From over here, it looks like they are doing rather well, over there.

Yeh, they're looking good. Hopefully we can keep this squad together now and make a big impact on the league. It's early days yet though...

Maine Road FC 3 Squires Gate 0

By Jeffrey Newman | Saturday 11th August 2012

A comfortable win from Maine Road sees them progress to the next round of the FA Cup.

Maine Road dominated the game against fellow NWCFL side Squires Gate thanks to goals from Tom Bailey and Captain Neil Chappell.

Road started extremely well and controlled the tempo of the first half pining back Gate for long periods but with a slow pace to the game neither side looked like opening the other up easliy. It was however the home side who had the early chances with Tom Bentham starting his first game of the season seeing early chances drop to him as a cross from the lively Martin Hill found him 6 yards out but he could not connect with the ball.

It was strike partner Tom Bailey who opened the scoring just before the interval as a pass from Rob Brocklehurst found Bailey on the edge of the box and his low drive caught the defence and keeper of guard and nestled perfectly in the bottom left hand corner.

Just before half time Alex Jay suffered a nasty tackle on the right hand side but it was his fall that caused the most concern as he landed awkwardky on his hip and had to be replaced at half time by Andy Thorpe

The second half saw Squires Gate improved dramatically but were limited to passing moves 30 yards from Greg Halls net but after a 20 minute good spell a killer goals for Gate saw the Maine Road Captain Neil Chappell seal the tie with an impressive finish on 65 minutes.

As the away side looked to change the try and keep the tie alive it was that man Chappell who ended all hope as Kevin McGrath slipped a pass to Chappell inside the box and a strong finish into the roof of the net earned him his 2nd.

Ah!, the good ole FA Cup. "Cup of dreams" "This is what the competition is all about" and loads of other stirring remarks, which can't come to mind at present, must be me age!!

Good video, of what appears to be an impressive display.
Their goalkeeper earned his bread and butter that day.
From reading reports on this game, we were pretty well on good form and it's not down to selective editing by the video maestro.
It is heartening to see the team play so well after the disappointment at the end of last season. I appreciate it is "early doors", but this could be the start of a good team. The new faces are settling in well and the management deserve a credit for getting this show off to a good start.
It's very early as we are know, we must not rest on our laurels, but push on to maintain this level, if we are going to make a mark in the premiership this season and make other sides stand up and realise that this is a good squad coming together.
