Quick update from today, 2-1 win v new mills. The side did extremely well, fitness from our perspective was good. match report will be online soon (probably Monday)

Next game is on Monday v Mellor at Wright Robinson College followed by Clitheroe away on Tuesday.

Maine Rd 2 New Mills 1

The opening preseason fixture of the 2012/13 season saw a new look Maine Road take on Our old NWCFL rivals New Mills, with a new look management team and playing staff.

Maine Road had no fewer than 7 new players in the squad from last seasons cup final line up and with a number of players still away, it seems as if the summer has certainly been a busy period for messers Thomas and Morrey.

New Mills who this season will operate in the Evo Stick North, brought a large squad as they look forward to the move from the South division.

Road had a number of chances in the first half through the lively Martin Hill and Paul Arrowsmith and could have taken the lead on numerous occasions before a defensive error played Matty Warburton in with only the keeper to beat, which with some neat footwork he did perfectly to score on his debut.

The second half saw a number of changes from both sides but it was not long into the second half when a clever 6 pass move down the left saw Jerome Bryson become the second debutant to score with a sublime pass into the bottom corner leaving the keeper with no chance.

New Mills did manage to test the resolve late on first scoring with 6 minutes to go, and then forcing Ryan Livesey into a full length save to his left.

All in all a good first game for Road.

Thanks "Johnm"
A clear report on a game played on a sunny day. Helped back up the excellent video/music combination on You Tube.
Makes for an interesting season ahead with a new management team at the helm, I wish them all the best in their task.

Hi Stech,

Good to hear from you.

I'm going to my first friendly up at Clitheroe tonight, so might be able to answer your question better then.

What is apparent is that Richard Gresty, Kevin McGrath and John Mason are back, so defensively we shouldn't be short of cover!! I think Tom Bailey has signed on after some time with Glossop & Flixton and yes, judging by the video a number of new guys clearly want to give it a go with us.

Could be a very interesting season!

As a management team John and I have been extremely busy over the summer. We identified a number of areas where we wish to strengthen and have brought in a few new and a few old faces. Our new look website will be live shortly, where you will be able to see this season's squad (If your unable to attend the games to see the lads on show)

On player retention, we have lost Liam Beckford to West Didsbury & Chorlton. Liam has always been open with us about his desire to return to West Didsbury should they achieve NWCFL football and we wish him all the very best and thank him for his efforts for Road.

Also Matty Huntley is still unsure of his position due to his university course and has returned to Sunderland. we are currently playing this by ear. Other than that we have retained all of last season's squad.

Chris & John

From the new Pitchero web-site (full details later):

Maine Road FC X1 4 Mellor 1

Monday 16th July 2012

Maine Road hosted the 2nd fixture in 3 days at the impressive facilities at Wright Robinson College, with a mixed XI taking on Mellor

Mellor started brightly against another new look side, but found themselves 1-0 down after 5 minutes when Rick Williams span quickly on the edge of the box to slot the ball into the bottom left hand corner past an outstretched keeper.

Road doubled there lead 6 minutes later when the Mellor Keeper came out of his net to clear the ball only to pass it to Jack Halsall who cleverly chipped the ball over the keeper and defenders for 2-0.

Skipper John Mason then made it 3-0 following a deep cross and with a swarm of bodies around the keeper, Mellor appealed for a freekick but Mason was on hand to knock the ball into the net at the back post.

Numerous changes in the 2nd half saw almost a complete change to the 11 players but the football continued to flow, Mellor who obviously received a pep talk at half time were much improved and scored a consolation goals with 15 to go. However Road still had more to show and with the excellent pressure on the Mellor back line, a communication error between the CB and goalkeeper saw the Mellor centre half slot the ball perfectly past his on rushing keeper.

Another good performance from Maine Road who visit Clitheroe next on Tuesday evening.

Clitheroe 1 Maine Road FC 0

Decent performance against Evo-Stick opposition.Lack of cutting edge in front of goal. Rushing off to work so might commentmore later. Alex captured it from a Road perspective in his usual inimitable manner (Check out Rory's bit of skill!!!):

Just caught the video from West Didsbury.
Nifty piece of camera work and editing.
Some good goals and a good overhead to finish it off.
Friendlys are funny old things, something and nothing, but gives the management and supporters a glance of what the club has on offer for the forthcoming season.
Tommo spoke of some new faces and some old ones coming into the fray.
Lets hope "the faces" gel quickly and Road can get off to a good start next month.
Ian Walker did a cracking job iplaying for MRFC and being in the hot seat and we cannot expect him to carry on forever. Thanks Ian.
It all bodes for an interesting start, now that John and Chris are thinking the game plans.
We must get right behind them and give 100% support. It might be difficult to imagine the team with out Ian at the helm, but things change at clubs, day in, day out. We at MRFC accept that.
Good luck to John and Chris as you strive to develope a strong winning squad and hopfully, bring better things to MRFC.

P.S.
Nice assist on the camera Dave, and you earned that cuppa. (Tea, Coffee or Bovril?)
